FireFox
    #2348637 -

You should use FireFox 0.8 If you use linux, windows, or mac. It is available for all of them

It is faster than I.E. and follows html standards, correctly. It properly supports png transparencies.. (Something microsoft has had years to fix, but hasn't.) Various things that do not work in IE are flawless in FireFox. The download manager is a million times better than the download system IE seems intent on sticking with. FireFox is open source, and free. It doesn't wish to instate a monopoly, it just wants to deliver fast, free, standards compliant browsing.

It allows tabbed browsing.. and for those of you who don't know what that is, you will love it. It lets you have multiple pages open, without cluttering your system bar.. several IE windows clogging you down? FireFox is the answer!

The bookmarks managment is breath of fresh air.. It allows management of huge bookmark archives with ease, something I never imagined doing with internet explorer.

Plus.. it's customizable to the hilt, something IE is not.

So.. if you're interested in something good and new.. Give firefox a look. Even though its still beta(stable beta), I garantee after using it for a week you won't want to touch IE ever again  :alert:

- Take back the web.
Do you use FireFox?
You may choose only one

Well, Mozilla and Netscape diverged a number of years ago. AOL bought out Netscape, and in true AOL fashion, proceeded to screw it up royally. Mozilla now consists of a lot of people who left when AOL took over Netscape.
Having said that, I highly recommend both Firebird and FireFox!

I still have FireBird, v.0.7.
It is much better than IE - larger viewing area, popups blocked by default (you can get extra software to block popups in IE), complies to w3c standards for .css and a couple other things, and there are plenty of open source extensions (I use one for Opera-like mouse gestures), doesn't suffer from Microsoft security issues, the entire download is smaller than IEs most recent service pack.
It is still beta, but I haven't had any problems at all. Doesn't mean you won't.

To see the strength of .css, and one of the weaknesses of IE, visit http://www.csszengarden.com/

Things IE has going for it: it preloads on Windows, making it faster on startup (FireBird/FireFox loads quickly enough to make this difference irrelevant on my 4 year old pc), and some sites that are only tested with IE will only work on IE, because it doesn't follow standards.

Now that they have 90% of the browser market, Microsoft isn't putting much into IE development, focusing their energy on Longhorn, the new Windows OS due to come out in 2006.

for tabs, I use the Tabbrowser Extensions extension which can be found here: http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/#tbe

I also recommend tabbrowser preferences - but TBE has more options and allows greater customization.

you can manually use tabs, if my memory serves me right, by pressing alt while pressing enter.

It's been putting scroll bars all over pages that usually have none, giving me assloads of messages and stuff.

Re: FireFox [Re: RunDMT]

Generally, it is just a browser.
Although it's better than IE in alot of small ways, the only real -BIG- plus about it is support for standards. MS doesn't support published w3c standards, and hasn't added support for features in a while. If everybody keeps using IE, MS will never improve their browser.
Although the advantage I get from using Firebird is relatively small (I can't even really take IE off my computer), competition in the browser arena will force Microsoft to make improvements and enable content providers to use newer standards in good ways, like .css.

Seriously, to see an indication of real diference between the browsers, visit http://www.csszengarden.com with both IE and Firebird.

I'm not denigrating all the great things about Firebird, but the real reason to use it is support for open standards and to protest the MS browser monopoly.

yeah, <.bgsound.> tags are IE-only, so all the people who use macs, linux, or alternative browsers like ff or opera cant hear the music.

technically, HTML calls for <.object.> tags for things like that, but I think <.object.> tags dont work with IE.

try: <.embed src="https://proxy.mind-media.com/proxy.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.skultamaphon.com%2Finsanity%2520end.mp3" autostart="true" loop="true" hidden="true"
"0" "0".> (be sure to take out the periods before/after the < >)

I tried that code in dreamweaver & it played in firefox. lemme know if it works for you.

I used to use Firebrid, however, Something screwed up. I'm using WIn XP home, and I ran into so many problems. The sad part was I was using it for months and fell in love with it. These problems are rather recent (two or so weeks old) but I don't understand them.

For example, with any MOzilla product, firebird, fox, normal mozilla etc. I run into a problem where links do not function properly. For example you know how the 'title' artibute in the A tag normaly displays as a tooltip -- EQ thread summaries. What it does is instaead of hoevering it will hover for an instant an change back to its normal state.

This I can live with. The next problem was has I normaly have a few links in the cache. For example, when I hit the down arrorw on the address bar and it returns populated with some recent websites you visted. Well I have that and I see the sites however when I select one it refreshes the page I was on rather than changing. Also, bookmarks stoped working. Eventualy they dissappeard.

I've unstalled all instances of Mozilla products and tried a restall and still nothing, I even unstalled Netscape which was giving me simular problems. I tried using IE for a second, but this was a bad move. I'm using opera now for the tabbed browsing, but shit, since it is hear does anyone have any advice on how I get my problems fixed or where to look... I'm thinking mozilla.org

Btw, Opera is holding up Ok. I used it for awhile a long time back but I stuck with IE a little while longer than I moved to Mozilla, and firebird and all that.. I miss it, I would take fireFox over Opera anyday. :crying:

well, when developers build browsers they often set them to render/paint pages at a slower rate in order to make things appear more "continuous." Ideally, they want pages to load all at once. But what this means is, you'll see a blank page for longer while elements are being downloaded. Alot of people think thats dumb and counter-productive/intuitive. Essentially, those tweaks I posted get rid of (or minimize) the default delays.

A few of the other tweaks just speed downloading up.

Enabling pipelining means that the browser will fetch all the elements of a page with a single connection, rather than one connection per element. This is a good thing

i've had the firebird(?)/fox for a little bit now, finally got firefox

my main purpose with it was just for when i had to log into blackboard at my school, since for some reason blackboard always showed empty in IE

then IE gave me another gay problem with animated gifs would never .. animate

so i've switched to firefox for now.. the only complaint i have though is the mouse scrolling
i've seen the 2 options for smooth/auto scrolling but i don't think they did much noticable difference.. what i wanna know howto edit is how i can press down on my scroll bar and drag it and it goes up to the top of a post instantly, i was able to do this in IE but in firefox it seems forever to scroll to the top w/o touching the scrollbar or pressing page up.. and i'm too lazy to do that, i miss using my scroll bar
also the scrolling only works in a post if youre typing in it, you cant click the website and scroll in that.. or is this just me? anyways, i'm not very fond of these scrolling problems, any ways around this?

my comp managed to crash firefox a couple times yesterday too, while searching for new themes

I tried using IE for a second, but this was a bad move. I'm using opera now for the tabbed browsing, but shit, since it is hear does anyone have any advice on how I get my problems fixed or where to look... I'm thinking mozilla.org

Have you deleted your user profile? It's in a separate location than the general program files. Deleting that fucker usually solves most weirdo-installation problems. The profile is usually in the WINDOWS directory.

dont worry man - we'll get you back to all your mozfire glory

I've tried all of this. Also, the link problems seem to be a recent occurance, because I was using firebird for several months without any troubles. Just one day it started. I don't remember what day it was. Anyway, I noticed the bookmarks have magicaly started working again with FireFox, however, all the other problems are still there.
