**UNITIKA <3103.T> CONTINUES RUN ON MUSHROOM PLANS**

Shares in textile maker Unitika Ltd up four percent at 52 yen, making it the most active issue by volume on the first section and adding to a 25 percent climb on Friday on news that the company would start producing mushrooms.

Unitika, which is expanding into non-textile areas including biochemicals, said on Thursday that it would sell from next year "cauliflower" mushrooms targeted at health-conscious consumers. The rare mushrooms contain a nutrient said to aid the treatment of ulcers. -- source (Forbes)

I believe BIO was working on trying to get them going on logs a couple of years ago, but I couldn't locate any followup posts.

A search of Unitika's Website did not turn up any more information either.

Does anyone have any more information on cultivation of this species?

GGMM third edition has the parameters and method for califlower mushrooms. Apparently the European strains are easier to fruit indoors than North American strains.

I just grew this one!  :grin:

Well, No, I actually just found it today. 3rd specimen Ive found in the past few weeks, all growing from dead oak branches.

I did a search for this in the forum, and all over the internet, but haven't found much on actually using it in a dish. Anyone have some favorite caulilfower mushroom recipies around?

It is at its very best when creamy white in colour.
It needs care when cleaning as it is very fragile with
lots of nooks and crannies, avoid cleaning in water.
Cut into thin slices and clean each side thoroughly,
they are delicious dipped in batter and deep fried, which
makes a excelent starter to any meal, a good accompliment
to any stew or casserole.

Yep Love this mushroom. hard to clean though. I cook it just like noodles. 20 min in gentile simmer with salt. top with fav. sauce. Also, can be added to casserole dishes.

Unitaka grow it commercially in bottles and have at least one publication on the internet. A strain deposited by them at a Japanese culture bank (NITE I think) can be purchased. It is a difficult species to work with because it is very slow growing. Using standard techniques it used to take me about 2 months to colonise grain for spawn, and 2-3 months to colonise a production block. I lose most attempts to contamination. Even when colonised they don't fruit easily. The write up in GGMM needs to be taken with a bucket of salt. 28 days for colonisation is bullshit. Also, I don't recommend FP's extortionately priced strain. Of several others that I have got from other sources, it is the worst. I e-mailed them about it and they said that they could not fruit it reliably.
There are various bits of info around that help. Optimum pH for growth is 5 and making agar and substrate blocks to that pH helps. Biotin and B-vitamins are supposed to help growth. There's a patent that describes pre-treatment of larch sawdust/chips with hot water to remove an 'inhibitory substance' in the green wood, prior to S. crispa cultivation. He also puts banana in the mix! The Japanese seem to prefer flour over bran for S. crispa. One of these days I hope to actually grow one.
