Light really doesn't matter. All light works well... i dont think any "kind" of light makes the slitest difference in weather the casing or cakes pin faster or not.

think of mushroom mycilium growing under the leaves of the forest floor. not much light makes it throught the tree canopy and even less makes it thru the leaves. in short the light thats around you is enough, assuming you have windows in your house.

The lights I had best results with were any lights with a blue spectrum, such as cool flourescents that I left on for a few hours a day to induce pinning, and lighting was reduced after pins matured... There really is no specific system to the lighting, as P.C. doesn't use light to grow, this makes me wonder if light is even specifically needed besides to help induce pinning. During the colonization stage of all of my casings (and cakes), I have left them in complete darkness.

I always just told myself they need some UV, so i use some fluorescent reptile light- works fine for me, but im sure any light will work.

i think that temperature flucuations play more a part in pin formations in casings than do lights. there was a thread a while back about how to do this. light plays very little part in initiating pins, asi i have had pins form in complete darkness. i think pinning is more dependant on temperature fluctuations.

They need the light for direction only from what i've heard, also you think just one of those flouresants that fit in a regular light socket would work fine, those ones that are spiraled tube that makes twist and turns and is a long twisted tube.

i agree with dexter... a 24 or 28 watt screw in flourescent is all you need to pin a whole roomful of little buddies...

I ran incandescent lamps for a few projects and just recently switched to a 24" grow flouro. I noticed a significant increase of hyphal knot formation and increased growth overall.

I'd recommend a grow lamp of some sort.

The home depot has those spiral fluoros that fit in regular light sockets for about $7. They have one that says it is a "daylight" bulb, and it's color temp is 6500K. Apparently this translates into higher amounts of the blue spectrum, which is good for pins formation. I don't know if it's the best, but it works quite well.
