Birth to Pinning
    #2081462 - 11/07/03 05:37 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Alright I need some feed back folks. There are 10 Malabar cakes completly colonized in a fruiting chamber. They are kept at a constant 95% humidity. For one week after birth they were kept at 85 degrees, realizing the temp was to high it was lowered to 70-75 degrees in the second week. There was still no sign of any pin formation at the beginning of the thrid week, so the temp was alowed to go as low as 60 degrees for about 48 hours and is now between 65 and 70 degrees. After 4 full weeks of incubation and 3 weeks in a fruiting chamber there are still no signs of pins!!! What the hell is going on with the little guys? Would the cake sitting directly on the perlite effect the cakes any?

Did you dunk and cold shock? This is supposed to help produce pins.

Once again I see a comment on dunk and cold shock. This is performed to my understanding, when you want to fruit a cake, not a casing. You lower the temperature in your fruiting chamber when you initiate pinning, but not before you case. Why cold shock a cake to initiate pinning when your going to break them up and case them, then allow them to colonize your casing. You want the temp to be relatively high to speed colonization through the casing. When the mycelium breaks the casing ceiling then you cold shock and introduce light to initiate pinning. Thats my take anyway.

Well, the cold shock does not always induce pinning. Especially if you raise the temperature back up to incubation temps afterwards. A lot of people notice that the mycellium tends to grow more vigerously after a break up and cold shock, making the casing colonize faster.

Cool. Sounds interesting. I've never tried that. Perhaps it acts as a dormant stage in development. Many organisms require this stage to exist. I've just never tried it because any documentation I've read never called for an intermedial lowering of temperature. I guess it does happen in nature.

I thought he was trying to get cakes to fruit not a caseing. I didnt see any mention of a caseing in this post.
