The likelihood that what we perceive is a simulated universe * 2
    #23309148 -

In theory it's computationally possible to simulate a the entire neurally perceptible universe. In fact, it could be argued that what we observe in quantum mechanics is the result of the fact that the simulation only simulates whatever is being perceived; as in Heisenberg's Uncertainty principle. If you consider the set of universes, simulated and non-simulated, the probability of perceiving the top-level universe is relatively low.

This makes little practical difference in terms of how to live your life, but it does raise interesting questions about what happens when a person "leaves the simulation".

In the book Psychedelic Information Theory the idea that it is possible for a simulated perceptual system to have a psychedelic experience is discussed, and specifically why different kinds of psychedelic experiences occur when those systems are altered in specific ways.

Quote:
Since PIT is based solely on physical models, it provides an objective formal framework for analyzing hallucination and expanded states of consciousness not only in humans, but in any mechanical system of perception.

there was literally a thread about this not 2 days ago.

And that "if you consider the universe set" line, how can you assert that when you know nothing of other universes and their purported existence?

Heh, I was trying to find that thread but couldn't.

In any case, my thread is pretty specifically suggesting the likelihood that the universe is in fact simulated and relating that topic to psychedelics.

There nevertheless remains the question of the cause of the existence of the top-level universe. Then again, cause and effect relations as we perceive them may simply be the result of our neural nets attempting to make incomplete binary distinctions in order to reduce the requisite processing power for simulating experience.

How do you explain the precision of our measurements? This is why morrow has me on ignore. He cant handle being questioned. I demand answers dammit :crankey:

It's very likely but for all intents and purposes it makes no difference in our lives.

@bodhi how does the precision of intruments in any way go against simulation theory?

Anyone got a lowpass filter in this biiiiash?
