Personally, I have come to believe that this age-related phenomena has to do with a lack of novelty. Time seems to slow down (perceptually) when one is arrested by a novel event; the brain takes in new and unique data; creates new primary pathways related to this novel event; and time appears to slow down. As you get older there are fewer truly new and unique experiences and far more day-to-day routine. Hence, time seems to fly by without much notice...

The cruel irony of this is, that as you get older the days become more precious, but they appear to fly by at a much faster rate, as you are hurled at an ever-increasing velocity towards your own personal event horizon; terra incognita: "the undiscovered country, from whose bourn no traveller returns."

The biggest change for my perception of time, happened when I became a Mother. Having such a close connection to another life force, and that child being one of your main focal points, every inch of growth, acquired trait, and learned ability measures your time.
