I probably just destroyed my spores, lmfao.
    #23297798 -

So, I trying to figure out my pressure cooker, the one I has has 2 pages in the manual and it's completely useless, and it took me a long time to figure all the shit out, and I was pretty annoyed.

I went ahead and PCed my jars and then when it was done I let the steam out via the valve and then took it into my inoc room and waited 20 mins for it to cool. I took the jars out, and they were still pretty hot but I could hold them with my gloves and it was fine, and I started to incoulate them.

About 5 mins ago it hit me that the jars were probably still to hot and I probably just wasted that syringe. I went ahead and put the jars up and am going to hope I get something, but idk.

Should I wait a few hours before inoculating, or is it okay to do it as soon as I did? I probably just destroyed my spores, so I'm coming to terms with that. Hoping I'm wrong, though. All is not lost, I have all the supplies to do it again, though I am annoyed that I did that. Hopefully I'm wrong, tho...

I have one more question.

I had medical tape on my jars and some melted in the PC and some did not. I've seen a lot of people put the tape on the jars before PC them and the tape was fine when it came out.

I was also fucking up and not sterilizing my syringe between the first 2 jars. I made a lot of small mistakes, which I think would have been fine had I not probably just boiled my spores alive haha.

Yeahhh those spores are probably dead. most folks say to leave it to cool overnight before inoculating. play it by touch though, sometimes it only takes a few hours to cool.

I know that my micropore tape doesn't seem to melt. don't know if thats the same as medical tape, I think it might be. I'm not sure why it would melt. Did you put foil over it? Maybe moisture had its way with it.

First of all, you shouldn't have depressurized your PC like that. Just let it cool down on it's own. You could have burst all your grains that way, and perhaps the jars.

20 minutes to cool? Try several hours. After it's been depressurized, you can take out the jars for a shake, but put them back in to cool the rest of the time.

Your spores may not have died, but the warmth was probably loved by the trace contaminants that were likely in your syringes. You should not use spores to grains if possible. Especially as you did, you will likely get just wet looking fermented grains now.

Just stop making these mistakes. Take your time and do things right. Work in a SAB if you aren't already. What tek were you following?

did he say he was using grains? I don't think he specified. I assumed somebody this new would be on PF tek.

Ah, possibly. I figured being he had a PC he'd be wise enough to use grains and do bulk; being PF tek was designed for steam sterilization. But I guess we'll wait and see what he says.

It has nothing to do with me not taking my time, it was my first time ever doing it and I was nervous and trying to make sure I did everything right, and because I was worrying so much I made small mistakes. #anxiety

And I was using PF tek, I did everything right aside from sterlyizing the needle every time (I did it at the beginning and after 2 jars I did it between the rest of the 6 jars I had, so two were not sterilized between jars) and doing the pressure cooker wrong.

Other than that I did fine, and I think I've learned from this.

And I used brown rice flour.

I can re do it tomorrow, but hopefully the jars are okay.

I'm going to redo this tomorrow, how long should I wait until I take the jars out of the pressure cooker and inoculate? A day? Or could I wait like 5 hours and then do it? I have to leave Friday, so I either do it tomorrow or I do it Monday, and I'd rather not wait that long and give them extra time to grow, if possible.

sounds like you should slow down and print out instructions or keep them on a phone in front of you while working.

yeah take even more time and don't get defensive when people give you advice.

Ok, man. So just make up a new batch of jars. Take your time, make sure you wipe the lips and everything before the dry verm, etc. PC them at pressure 1hr. before you go to bed. Let them sit in the PC overnight. The next day take off the foil and inoculate them whenever you're ready. Flame sterilize the needle between jars, don't wipe it with alcohol after flaming.
Work in a SAB if you can; even a cardboard box with armholes will increase chances of success (if your room isn't super clean)

If it helps, do a dry run a couple of times with water or something.

I'm not being defensive. I took my time. I just was nervous and I forgot 1 or 2 steps because of it. I see how it sounds like I was being defensive, it's how I can come across. I'm not (I do realize how incredibly defensive this sounds, HAHAHA). I fucked up and probably should have slowed down even more, but I feel that I was taking my time. It took me almost 15 mins to do 7 jars. I feel that's a longish time.

But yes, I should print out directions. I have them written up, but not printed. Gonna do that next time.

But what is the minimum I can wait until I inoculate? I'd prefer to not wait a full day and get them PCd and inoculated tomorrow. Will 4 hours of cooling time be fine?

And I can't use the PC over night because my roomie refuses to allow it to go over night. Has to be done tomorrow, all of it. Or next week.

Not running all night, just cooling over night. Why is that so bad?
4 hours is minimum, try for 6. Don't do that shake I mentioned earlier. I'd assumed you were using grains.

God damn it, if you took your time you wouldn't be here man, just admit you need to slow down, like everyone is saying.  Why are you still set on rushing the cooling time?  It's just time when jars have to sit there doing nothing, your roommate isn't okay with that?  If they're being that difficult about jars cooling I seriously doubt they'll be cool with the rest of the process.

Didn't I already admit it like a post ago? :P

But yeah, I do need to slow down. The more I think about it I do realize I did it too quickly, but it was because I was nervous. It honestly felt like I was doing it forever, so I thought at the time I was taking my time, but I wasn't lol.

And I will just PC it when I get up and let it cool until later in the night and then do it a few hrs before bed.

I take at least 1 hour to do 10 pasty plate transfers. Its nothing I try to rush at all. Best to take your time, very slowly if need be, and get it right. Because if you don't, the setbacks can days if not weeks.

The only way to get rid of the anxiety is to keep doing it. follow the directions for your tek and keep at it. 1-2 successful attempts and you will have your confidence.

Your jars are ready to inoculate when they are room temperature. So, however long it takes them to get to room temperature is how long you should wait to inoculate. The whole 'wait overnight' thing is just a foolproof way to make sure newbs aren't noccing up hot jars, like you already did.

And because I can't use the PC tonight, as it's "too late" and I'm in no mood to fight with my roomie. She's fine with it all, but she's afarid that it will blow up and kill us in our sleep if we do it over night, so she's insiting I don't turn it on until tomorrow, and I'm not in the mood to fight it, lol.

But if I do it when I get up and leave it until the night, 6-8 hrs of it being off should be fine, I'd imagine.

Inform them that they're afraid of a depressurized common cooking pot?

I'm just imagining this paranoid retard waking up in the night to check on a cold pot sitting on the stove :rofldrunk:

Don't get me started on this. Some people can't be reasoned with. You try and reason and they just keep getting angry if you disagree. Waste of time and only makes the situation worse.

Seriously.. You'd have to fall asleep with the stove on for it to do anything bad.  You can crash out as soon as you cut the heat on the stove with no consequence.  Sometimes ladies are dumb..  It's way more likely for this chick to die while driving to work than it is for the PC to do anything.

Okay, I'll say this again:

I never said to PC overnight

Get it? You would turn it OFF before you went to bed, and let it cool overnight.

You can bring it to your room to cool an hour or so after you PC it. Just carry it carefully and set it down gently, if your roommate is going to be so stupid.

ya I don't think dude ever said she was against it cooling over night. 99.99% she is probably just against running it over night, which is understandable and smart. i wouldnt sleep with mine running.
