How long for pressure cooker to depressurize after heat turned off?

After the stove is turned off, how long roughly speaking does a pressure cooker take to depressurize so you can open it? Just wondering, time is tight today.thanks

on my pressure cooker, there is a small valve that pops up once pressure is starts to build up, so i guess once that little valve drops back down, pressure is almost back to normal.
You should leave it to cool overnight anyway, so your jars are definatly cool enough to inoculate

This is the situation -
Pressure cooking now and need to leave ASAP!
I know you need to let it cool (it'll cool from 10am to 6pm)
But, what I need to do (I thought) is once the PC depressurizes, take the jars out and shake them like crazy (it's WBS in there) to distribute grains evenly so they don't dry out unevenly.
Then put the jars back and let em cool.
I'm just wondering how long it takes for your PC to despressurize, a rough estimate....10 mins? 15 mins? 30 mins? 1 hour? Just wondering how long it'll take for the little thingy to go down (for the PC to depressuriiiiize)
Thanks!

Also: is it a very bad thing to remove the pressure regulator (weight that rocks on top) before the PC has depressurized?

I would say mine takes about 30 minutes. However, I cannot open it if there is still pressure in it. If you can, open the valve carefully and see if steam blows out, if not - it's probably ok to open.
edit: You should probably read your manual, it should have notes on all this.

The manual says it's locked 'til the pressure equalizes, but doesn't say how long, and I didn't know if it'd be a bad thing to remove the pressure regulator after the heat is turned off (thought somewhere someone said that release of pressure quickly is bad and can introduce contams).

Yeah so I'm still confused as to whether or not it's ok to remove the rocker before depressurization.
Right now the rocker isn't rocking (heat's off) but a slow hissing is coming from the thing it's sitting on.
I'm not risking screwing this up so I'll leave the rocker on even though it seems like it'll make it take longer to depressurize. It'd be nice to know for the future if it's ok to take the weight (rocker, regulator...) off at this point or not. =)

That was useful but it didn't answer my question. Definitely good to have read that though, thanks

my PC takes about 15 min to calm down.
when i do LC i release the pressure by removing the weight immediately. however. be careful.. the steam will melt your skin. i use a set of tongs used for grilling to remove the rocker when done PC'n...
when i do grains. i let it naturally depressurize. ...if thats a word.. yea about 15 - 20 min

NEVER remove the rocker before pressure reaches zero. If you do so with grains, you can destroy the filter and/or dry out the grains as the steam(and the moisture within the grain) leaves the jar. If you do it with liquid culture it will boil over and/or destroy the filter and crack the jar. This hobby calls for a bit of patience. You're not going to speed up a 30 day grow by saving fifteen minutes popping the weight on your pressure cooker. This is basic physics. RR

That's why I didn't remove the rocker, just making sure. Whew. Not really a matter of speeding up the process, but more of a "shit, I'm late for X" kinda thing. =) Thanks everyone
