I can break that for you. I don't think it's rude to ask someone's age and I'm not exactly young. Probably the only reason this hasn't caused me issues yet is because I really don't care how old someone is and never ask anyways . I get asked pretty regularly (usually it's a question that immediately follows the words "my son") and I don't really care if anyone asks.

I Have looked  young for my age ever since I got on Rx amphetamine until I was 14, still look young , but now I at least look over 18
When I was younger this did offend deep down cause I was insecure about myself at the time

And I think asking some stranger or acquaintance this out of the blue is a bit unneeded , but a coworker you  been talking to for awhile?  Idk  just seems uptight and insecure to me

Hello.  As most of you know, I am an immigrant to Canada, so there are lots of things that I need to learn.  Today at work, a coworker asked me how old I was.  I said "I am not telling you".  Then he said when people said that, it meant they were being sneaky or that they had something to hide.  Also that he should not trust them.  Then he said that it was rude.

I am confused.  I thought that in a country like Canada, it is actually rude to ask people personal question like "how old are you".  But now this person is saying that *I* am being rude.

So..who is right?

I don't know specifically about Canada but in most western cultures it is generally considered impolite to ask a woman her age, or to ask an acquaintance point blank how much they earn.

I'm Dutch and prone to what is known as "Dutch Directness", the Dutch are generally considered rude for not shying away from negative feedback.

^ I'm 26 and get mistaken for an 18-20 year old regularly. When asked what my secret is to staying so young, I tell them a lifetime of smoking, drinking, gambling and using the lord's name in vain keeps a man young and prosperous for years to come.

I haven't stopped smoking weed for more than a few days since I was like 16. If I did, it was short, involuntary breaks. I'm pretty much stoned 18/7.

I dont see what the big deal is. Im a union automated press line technician and work with people who are in there 60s and 50s and going to be retiring soon.

Im only 22 and in 2 years i made it to one of the highest paying positions in my shop. There is only 16 of us in this department. Im proud to look like a 18 year old working with people who have been doing this job for 30 years and i am only 22. Being the young gun at a good high paying union job with a 401k and healt care makes me pretty good about myself. I have no shame saying im 22 and work circles around people who have been running these machines for the last 30 years.

/end rant

People kind of praise me here for being so young in this industy. I have trained so many people of various ages when i was a machinists in a diffrent department, teaching people how to run cnc lathes. Its funny to see a "kid" teach 40 year old men. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Also the old people i work with now are happy to teach me diffrent things, and work together as a team.

What is a cnc lathe?  Does it manufacture guns?

You could probably use one to make some of the parts (namely the barrel) but it's not a 3d printer. Lathes are for turning stock and shaping it (think decorative posts/cylindrical legs on furniture for example, all the groves and slopes and stuff are done on a lathe).

The CNC portion basically just means it's controlled by a computer and can perform and repeat very precise measurements (where as done by a person the variation could be a lot greater on piece to piece depending on the person's skill)

We turn shafts and gears on them taking a ugly metal part and make it nice and shiny

Google lathes or cnc machines for a better explanation. But we do have one machine that used to make gun barrels generations ago. It now  is the first step in making a 30lb transmission shaft for ford f250 and f350 trucksm

It is VERY slightly impolite to ask someone their age. The same goes for not answering.

Sounds like the guy was being a complete ass by persisting, that really doesn't depend much on your reaction.

If someone has a serious problem with such a petty question, that's their issue.
I'm in my late 20s, and this has as much to do with age as hating on black people does, pointless banality.
