Was I being rude? Cultural question
    #23131586 -

Hello.  As most of you know, I am an immigrant to Canada, so there are lots of things that I need to learn.  Today at work, a coworker asked me how old I was.  I said "I am not telling you".  Then he said when people said that, it meant they were being sneaky or that they had something to hide.  Also that he should not trust them.  Then he said that it was rude.

I am confused.  I thought that in a country like Canada, it is actually rude to ask people personal question like "how old are you".  But now this person is saying that *I* am being rude.

So..who is right?

no but really, I'd have to hear the tones of your voices and see the expressions on both of your faces throughout the conversation to determine who is truly rude

Yes, it is pretty common to consider this rude.

Unless you are trying to figure out if they are the age of consent for sex or alcohol it is typically rude to ask this sort of question, especially since you are co-workers.

You're in the right. It is rude to ask someone their age in casual conversation, plain and simple.

Depends where in Canada we are talking. In Newfieland it's rude not to throw the toilet paper in the trash when your done taking a shit in the corner.

I don't think it's rude, it's commonly brought up in conversation, at least where I live.  I'm only 23 though so maybe it's rude when you are older?  Idk i still ask older folks and none of them have thought it rude.

I (American) asked some girls in Europe this question once while trying to make conversation. They called me rude and proceeded to tell me how shitty the US was along with their citizens in comparison to Europe.

I dont see any problem with asking such a question, but kind of learned my lesson regarding asking women. If youre a guy and wont tell your age, then fuck you.

For me it's more like a "what stage of life are you at right now?" kind of question.  There is a huge difference in life experience between the ages of 18-30.

Most people younger than that say they're 18, anyway.  It's probably only rude if you're insecure as fuck about your age.

Traditionally it's rude to ask a woman her age.

Young people maybe consider that old fashioned now?

Asking age could be a hint regarding a womans looks.  Women are often overly sensitive about looks.

I personally think it's cool if a woman is open about her age.  I value honesty over etiquette.

Kinda on board with this

I have no idea why people are pilgrims about age,

How is that rude?

How is it your fucking business or really relevant to how you would treat a person in the context of the OP?

Oh I forgot.

Well
I think him being a uptight pilgrim about a petty almost common question when getting to know coworkers makes him kinda sneaky, and insecure about a mild question like that

And I think the guy who asked the question of OPs age kinda took it too far with his responses

They both were being weird in a negative way over something petty.

I think most of the people who don't think its rude are likely younglings.
I don't give a fuck personally, but a lot of people are sensitive about their age
unless you are their friend or something it's not really any of your business anyway nor does it matter at all unless you are trying to fuck them.

Interesting to note that the only ones in this thread who think it's not rude to walk around just asking people how old they are are the young, inexperienced, and naive kids.

Yeah.  You know what's up.  Really it comes down to it being nobodies business rather than it possibly being rude IMHO, but we're old enough that we know in certain company and situations it is rude.
