Seems silly - but Japan was still much better prepared for war at the outbreak going into 1942 - Not to mention the US was going to be attempting to fight a war thousands of miles away with literally almost nothing between our nation and theirs but ocean... and Japan had quite a powerful navy at the time.  Literally all Japan really needed to do was keep the US navy underwater and the war was in the bag for the foreseeable future.

The mixture of massive luck/skill/planning/preparation leading to the Battle of Midway nearly decided the entire following war in the US' favor... and it could've nearly as easily swung the other direction...

It's easy to see the situation as highly biased towards the US but consider that Japan had been at war quite consistently for the last 40 years - they were hardened veterans and experience means a lot in conflict... they owned half of China, all of Korea - and almost all the islands between Australia and Japan... Our industrial capacity once completely engaged was much higher as well as having better access to key resources, but I think it's completely wrong to get the idea that the war was completely tilted towards the US from the start and that Japan stood no chance. No chance of invading the US alone probably  but that was never their tactic.

Japan is surely a redoubtable nation. But cmon, no fucking navy woulda won the fuckin war :shake:

 You clearly don't really know what you're talking about. Naval superiority/dominance is one of the most important aspects of any conventional war and has been for centuries.

"I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

only one flaw in this

japan never made an unconditional surrender until after they were nuked

what exactly was it that japan did prior to and during WWII, oh yeah, korea and
china are the first things that come to mind, then comes the treatment of
prisoners during the war

why do they deserve an apology?

Ever since Themistocles helped put the coffin nail in the Persians advance at Thermopoly.

Naval support with a strong ground attack is a potent one two punch.

I thought they surrendered too, but that seems culturally unlikely. Have you seen the pictures of what they did in China? We saw pictures in school, and I don't know how they were allowed to show us

What would we have done without our navy? I mean literally... how else do you get across the pacific ocean?

As I said Japan didn't need to invade America to achieve their goal in the war, they simply had to keep us out of their business in Asia. Without the navy there is no practical way for the US to fight such a foe.

There were many factors that made the decision to drop the bombs. The number one reason was that Japan refused to surrender. They wanted the US to invade them like we did Europe. That would have cost millions of lives. They were ruthless as well. You know the japs were using the jet stream to float bombs over the US mainland. Terrible plan but they did kill a few innocent people. That's basically indiscriminate bombing.

The next reason was in war you use the technology you create. We were more advanced and thus we were able to use them before they could. We used them on 2 cities that were major industrial complexes for their war efforts. You think they wouldn't of cared to drop a nuke on NYC or Washington DC?!

Japan is now a great country. I believe in the long run they advanced by losing.

My question is how many are alive that were in Japan during ww2? That's kinda like asking the Jews to apologise for the crucifixion of the southwest called christ. Or for any horrible things done well 80 plus years ago. I say should people learn how to pull back in a fart. Saying your sorry and you did something stupid never changes what happened

Oh, so now systematic gang rape and mass murder on a level potentially surpassing that carried out by the Nazis is a bad thing? HOW DARE YOU?! Hirohito got off lightly, but I guess he wasn't personally really doing a tremendous amount except acting as a figurehead.

We have apologized for this, which is a big reason we are in debt to Japan.

We didn't apologize right after we dropped the bombs, we were still at war.

Though funny to note, when you google 'apology country wikipedia' the first country that comes up is Japan and as far as I know the only country that has its own 'apology wiki' is Japan

I don't even know how to respond to this. We had an alliance just as they did. We didn't spend all our money rebuilding England or France, or any other country afterwards. WE are in debt to japan for a very inhumane act that WE carried out on them. Anything else is insufficient in my mind. No other bombings in history have destroyed as many people as the atom bombs that we dropped on them.

That is nothing to be proud of as a country, or support for that matter. It ended a war that was already over, great job.

Easy for someone on the other side of it to say. Countries make relations based on their aspirations as a whole, they side with those who have similar goals. Doesn't make them bad people or deserving of something that atrocious.

We did spend quite significant amounts of money rebuilding England and France actually.

If the US started a war that killed  as many people as Japan did at that time I wouldn't be surprised when our enemies came back at us with everything they could muster.
