Does perlite dry out in the terrarium?
    #2300643 - 02/04/04 12:44 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I have a terrarium with one cake in it, and I'm seeing less condensation than I used to. Is it typical for perlite to dry out? Is it easily rehyrdated (e.g., by just carefully pouring water--not too much--over the top of it)?

Here are my specs: rubbermaid terrarium measuring 12" by 8" by 10" tall. I soaked my perlite in spring water with a dash of H202, straining it until no more water dripped out. It's been in the terrarium for about 5 days. I fan about 4 times a day. I'm thinking there's No Way it should be dry by now, but I was just wondering. In general do you perlite users have to rehyrdate the perlite? How often?

Finally, what are your feelings on perlite vs. geolite? Is geolite better all around? Is it necessary to have air bubblers under the geolite, or can a wet layer of it simply be placed in the bottom of the terrarium, with the cakes sitting on top of it? Thanks.
Perlite or geolite?

perlite DOES need to be rehydrated sometimes.

How often? I realize it depends on the conditions, but how do you check? Does it noticably change color? I'm assuming it might need to be rehydrated before it gets to the obvious point of being dry and dusty. In general it should last several weeks, right?

right at least several weeks, if it doesn't seem to be producing humidity put about a half inch of water in the bottom.
