James Van Praagh - communicator with the dead?
    #2294342 - 02/02/04 01:59 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Anyone here believe that Mr. Van Praagh actually communicates with disincarnate entities? Did you catch his recent show on Larry King Live?

"Death is a part of life, and pretending that the dead are gathering in a television studio in New York to talk twaddle with a former ballroom-dance instructor is an insult to the intelligence and humanity of the living." --Michael Shermer

I thought it was all total bullshit till the famously skeptical Larry King agreed with him when Van Praag began stating specifics about his King's father.

I imagine he has some intuitive abilities. His whole philosophy on death, or what he shows me though makes me desperately afraid to die.

You mean that, when I die, my spirit will be stuck here on Earth following my alive relatives around telling them over and over and over that I am ok even though I am dead? WTF.

JVP: "I am sensing flowers near your bed...roses. *checks for feedback and gets none* Um, a painting of flowers somewhere in your house? *blank* I meant your mom's house? *silence* You have an Aunt Rose? *still nothing* You once visited a garden where there were roses?"

Caller: "Yes, as a child we visited a botanical garden" *BINGO!*

JVP: "Your mother wanted me to tell you that heaven reminds her of that garden and she treasures her memory of that day with you."

Caller: "But I didn't go there with my mom.."

*click*

LK: "Next caller, please..."

My vignette may be amusing, but his con artist tactics of preying on people's grief is NOT amusing at all to me.

Well, it sucks they are being preyed upon and all, but people need to wise up.

As long as you don't think of the people suffering from it, then it is amusing. Like violence.

Some Guy: "Okay".

I am hard pressed to believe that there are actual people that went out in front of an AUDIENCE and talked about their dead husband (or whatever). the psychic asks them questions and at key moments it plays out to their emotion and stuff. the camera goes out, and as soon as rthast happens, all four chicks are crying, on cue. this is a psychic TV SHOW, i think it's for entertainemt, and to think that's put on as such is sick.

it's all about money I'm afraid, and this is something I really hate to say. i've stopped watching tv altogether, save cartoons because of stuff like this, and reality shows. not to mention how quick things are flashing now, especially the advertisements, gives me a headache. the way that dudes question are arranged, is like he's i dunno, makin shit up.

look at his eyes when they travel upwards. is it to the left, or to the right? is he makin shit up? or is he remembering a script?

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

A dear friend of mine, who is a highly intelligent and mature woman with a PhD, lost her daughter a few years back. She was all set to pay $200 for a half-hour visit with this charlatan until I persuaded her not to go. The grief experienced by a parent whose child has died is such that they will do most anything to find relief, including suspending rational judgement.

His audience is not filled with stupid, ignorant people, but people in some of the worst pain imaginable looking for a solution.

$200 might have been worth the placebo, if it made her feel better.

Most psychologists would have kept her in therapy for years, or at least until her HMO was drained.

Most psychiatrists would probably try to push uneccesary medication on her.

any liscensed practioner would have charged her a lot more than $200, thats for sure.

Perhaps true, but your statement is definitely a "strawman argument" as no mention was made of "classical" or "accepted" grief or depression treatment or counseling. You might want to start a new thread on this if it interests you.

To clarify your position: Do you truly believe that these types of con-artists perform a useful societal function and should not be exposed for the frauds that they are? (If yes, see my "Penile Enlargement" thread as there are untold frauds bilking the susceptable and tell me where you would draw the line.)

why does everything have to be an argu ment? It was just a statement. I couldn't really care less about who "wins" this discussion.

LOL @ "types". Tisk tisk, SWAMI. You should know me well enough by now to know that I dont believe in "types". There are only individuals. I dont think JVP is too bad a guy. But I acknowledge that a less scrupulous person could use his methods in a much less prosocial way.

why does everything have to be an argument?

Your statement is in fact an argument. Not sure why that is problematical for you.

Webster:

ar?gu?ment ( P ) Pronunciation Key (?rgy-mnt)
n.

A course of reasoning aimed at demonstrating truth or falsehood.

A fact or statement put forth as proof or evidence; a reason.

A set of statements in which one follows logically as a conclusion from the others.

It was just a statement. I couldn't really care less about who "wins" this discussion.
There was no mention of winning or losing; only clarification.

You should know me well enough by now to know that I dont believe in "types". There are only individuals.
Ah, so we should never discuss groups or sets of people? That is done here by everyone, you included.

Uh, Swami... in the future, I'd like you to not group me in with "everyone."
I feel that as an individual, it is both demeaning and inaccurate to assume that ANYTHING applies to me at all.
