I think you said it well. I like the parables, the best ones have a good bit of ambiguity built into them. Pronouncements like the one you mentioned, seem out of place next to the parables.

Your experience isn't exactly relative to the language you choose to use to describe it, but your perception of it is.

This is something I'm sure you've seen a lot  -- the map is not the territory.
You could label it as "temporary insanity" or "genuine mystical experience" -- and each one describes the same phenomena.

It really depends on how you want to integrate it.

Is it something that you can integrate, and will be beneficial to yours and/or others existence?
Go with genuine mystical experience.

Is it something which you would rather not integrate, and isn't beneficial to yours and/or others existence?
Temporary insanity.

You experienced a degree of ego death and were overwhelmed by your selfless feelings which led to experiences of love, empathy or compassion for the strangers around you.

There is no sane or insane there is simply a spectrum of sanity and you sound like you're at one end.

Not exactly, and definitely not in the sense of putting you down. :nono: Being traumatized, (in this context by religious belittling), would prevent most anyone from being open to the same religious language-game later in life. I't's not about a failure of comprehension, you're a bright man, it's about not wanting to hear the same language that was accompanied by God-knows what kind of guilt-laden, accusatory, demeaning shit. For a majority of individuals, teasing apart the good from the bad like knotted hair is not the choice. They just cut off the whole problem, tossing out the good with the bad (like 'tossing the baby [Jesus] out with the bathwater'). It would require an intense therapy to separate the "wheat from the chaff" and incinerate the chaff. Memories remain, but the nasty negative emotions are excised and cease to ill-affect the person.

How about beginning with Love as a State of Being, beginning with page 59? Because I take the love-as-will notion from Augustine of Hippo, who is a lot more difficult to read than Ram Dass! :grin: But, I'll offer another link for a paper on Augustine and love. Essentially "For Augustine, love is always an act of the will."  Maybe begin with the middle of page 28 to page 31: "The potential for this movement inward..."

Well, for lots of people, love is wrongly believed to be a matter of feeling because it is 'clothed' in feelings. But Christian love in the Bible is agapé and this form of love is more a state of willing-the-good than a natural love. Agapé is accompanied by 'disinterested warmth' towards others, not the stronger more visceral emotions of the "natural man." So, if you see a perfect stranger about to fall in an open manhole and call out to that person to warn him - even though he is a stranger - then you are practicing agapé. It's like the story about 'the good Samaritan' treating a stranger's wounds with wine and oil and bandages, and providing him with sustenance to help him on his way with no thought of recompense. It's a matter of will emphasizing activity in the Christian tradition over and above a state of being which suggests passivity or impassiveness. So, the New Testament teaches agapé rather than the Greek philosophical apatheia or ataraxia which are closer to the detachment that Ram Dass' Indian sensibility coveys (if that helps any).
