McKenna Is the fucking man.

He said himself he didn't want people hanging on his every word and didn't want to be seen as a prophet. Psyches are way more than "interesting"  drugs are god

Here's my thing. Its just my opinion. You cant have a drug, or external idea be the center of a ideaology or practice

Ya drugs are amazing. But I feel every tripper run into this is issue here and there. I dropped acid and ate shrooms dozens of times when depressed. And while my spiritual ecstasy was amazing, I would eventually come down to the same old boring reality. and while I may be slightly more happy, it wasn't a truly long term change in my "spiritual fitness". I think drugs opened up doors for future exploration. I eventually got into meditation, yoga, pranayams. I consider eating clean 80% vegan easily digesting food as important and almost a spiritual practice in itself. Some high quality meats in there, but not much. I try and sleep before 10:30pm unless I am socializing that night etc. Simple shit like this has changed my life much more than any amount of drug ever could

If I had to go back in time and choose between two parallel universes, one where I started all this "spiritual hippie shit" versus one where I got 10 pounds each of MDMA, shrooms, LSD, DMT, weed, meth, speed, heroin, morphine, and coke, I would hands down chose the first one. Literally an hour of breathing excercsises, postures, and meditation has done much more for my life and well being then thousands of dollars of psyches could. And it has helped my mental clarity and well being more than me taking hundreds of dollars of amphetamine over the course of 1-2 years

Maybe I am different. and I will still inevitably go back to doing psyches. I am just saying that for long term life changes, psychedelics don't seem like the best idea

I enjoy Terrence McKenna, and similar speakers like Alan Watts (whom I identify with moreso). It's not about what he is talking about per se, it's about presentation. It's almost a type of poetry in a way to be able to talk about issues in philosophy without the burden of scientific fact. In this way he is no better than a religious preacher, but he's a talented one at that. Speaking in parables so to say. Speaking from his own experience as if it were fact, without the burden of clarification every other sentence, or of limiting it's meaning by using purely rational thinking. It's not strictly to be taken as fact, that is known before hand. The rest is a story in myth and fiction, with meaning intertwined.

It's nice to hear people who have a well rounded oratory skill talk about stuff in this type of format. Speakers like Terrence McKenna often voice things that people think themselves and aren't as willing to discuss because of the implications of voicing thoughts that sometimes have little perceived practical value.

That's not an afront to the value of science though. It's a different way to look at things outside the realm of pure rationality. And sometimes that is nice, and leads to thoughts you wouldn't otherwise have. It's poetry.

Even Watts is pseudo, but I agree that he's more philosophically sound.

he's life philosophy, so like philosophy lite. Most actual philosophers of import say very little that influences how i live, especially these days. A lot are still interesting though

I've read nearly every publication from Alan Watts and listened to every talk available. He's certainly changed the way I look at things sometimes, and gotten me interested in things I wouldn't have otherwise. His voice is a type of music to my ears in a way, and his publications very easy to get into and read in one go. It's the way his presentation is structured, it flows really well. If I was ever to do public speaking, he'd be the inspiration I'd like to draw from.

Have read two books of Terrence McKenna's, and listened to a lot of his talks as well. Both are really good orators. Not in the sense of an orator as a teacher or a politician who gives good speeches. They have their own distinct styles that are far more comfortable to listen to than the average speaker, styles that lend themselves to certain "eureka" moments in a way.

Too often you have speakers, in the "motivational speaking" realm that feel snakish when you listen to them. There is no intelligence in how they speak, only allusions to it. Even when it isn't meant to be, it feels like a sales pitch in a way. It's not that these people are wrong in what they are speaking about anymore than other people, it's that their entire presentation feels plastic and pedantic.

Very much so, though the style he speaks in is meant to vivify the more delusional aspects of ourselves. That these thoughts exist and are not talked about often is because as I said above, most people who try to speak about this pseudo stuff are very bad at it for various reasons. It takes a certain kind of person to talk about this comfortably. In many of his talks he talked about the difference between Alan Watts the man, and Alan Watts the actor, the presenter. There's not many opportunities for a person to talk about the spiritual aspect of nature without completely foregoing what we consider normal rationality. Because the spiritual can't practically be measured so to say.

Something to keep in mind for those only skimming the surface of "Terence McKenna". The distinction between a man and his work is often overlooked.

I've only read one of each of the men's books, so I am no authority on either of them. Watts' The Book... was eye opening candy to a teenaged Mike, but both Watts and McKenna are too religious and mystical to be teachers for this hardened Realist.

On one hand, I see a weaver of tales with a surprising number of convictions for one interested in dissolving boundaries and opening the mind: An idealist.

On the other hand is the introduction of Nothing to the West.

Yawn.

Fair enough
Of the two, I listen to Mckenna more, partly because I have like 80 hrs of him on my ipod, but also because his talks are like science fiction, and very entertaining for me even if I completely disagree with his conclusions ha

I also find it valuable to listen to people I disagree with, like Graham hancock and others, so that I can figure out exactly what about their thinking is flawed, and try to avoid the same foibles myself. in Hancocks case, its virtually everything he says
In Mckenna's case its a strange habit of completely ignoring occam's razor while yet declaring that actual sound scientific endeavor is somehow fatally flawed in a way his own thinking is not.

it was. no doubt about that. But like I said, once you drop acid a few times and you have opened up that door, its time to pursue that path

Like I used to live at home with my rents. But to grow, I had to say goodbye eventually and move into a dorm for college. And I still visit, but being at home with my parents all day is a phase that you should leave behind when you turn a certain age

I hope my metaphor gets the idea across. Psyches are one part of the larger spiritual lifestyle. Using it here and there is great. But dropping acid a hundred time would not have given me the wisdom that 2 years of this "hippie lifestyle" has given

The states of high conciousness that you reach with LSD etc. are so profound and so mindblowing that I almost feel it creates problems on its own. Instead of introducing mental clarity it causes more issues and delusions due to the fact it is so hard to intergrate with waking life. Not "bad". very powerful chemicals. But not the center of a spiritual practice, ideology, lifestyle, or career
