10 years is the difference between and Iphone 6s and the first Gen Iphone.

I'd go into a room with a round door knob and watch that robot struggle until it runs out of power.

You are getting a little ahead of yourself.

Well, everything depends really. It could become real in 10 years, or 50 years, it just depends on When the right genius figures it all out.

They have so many scientists working on it, it could take 50 years, it could take 10. The evolution depends on the people making it happen.

I have faith that we will see it sooner, than later. Because of the amount of resources, people, being put on the task. It has insane interest out of all technologies right now.

I don't think I'm ahead of myself.
Okay, about the IPhone, instead of 10 years, make it 15. Flip phones were being used.

What stops people from stealing autonomous robots the same way people steal cars?

What if people program robots to steal other robots?

A multi-million dollar machine, or even something that costs as much as a car will be stolen by drug addicts and sold for components and scrap metal as soon as one hits the street.

Your probably right, to an extent.

But they will not be 'multi-million' or even million dollars.
At first they will, the prototypes and the first gens. But once they figure out how to manufacture all of the parts in a cost effective way they will probably be as expensive as a Quality Vehicle. Probably even cheaper.

I'd imagine it would be more difficult than you'd think to capture a robot once they become available to the public.
They would have to have some sort of self defense abilities, or evasive abilities.
However, very possible. But, highly illegal and would easily be tracked if stolen.

Lol those robots crack me up. They're so stupid they can barely walk. Robots are far far away from taking away even 1% of our jobs. Robots can only do what we program them to do, and until we develop AI it will never happen. Maybe our grandkids or great grandkids will see it start to happen but not us.

Currently, for the most part, we could automate all service positions.  It would be far cheaper and more efficient to do so.  So why haven't we?  Because it would be a critical blow to the economy since the service sector is responsible for >50% of employment.  So yeah, a bit over 1%.

You're living in a fantasy land. The worker in a drive through fast food joint can't even be replaced by a robot. Voice recognition technology is getting better but can only react to certain commands.

So you think replacing jobs with robots would be a critical blow to the economy? I'm an engineer and have first hand experience that automating jobs is far more cost effective. You don't have an hourly wage to pay. The moment it can be done, it will be done.

Who knows when robots will become a massive force in our world?
.
Depends on the amount of funding. If we threw a few trillion dollars in funding towards their development I bet we'd see robots commonly doing fairly complex jobs in 25 years.
.
The car industry already has them. Well maybe they aren't technically robots?

.
You know what the US military is going to do with this technology?

Aiming for a moving target would be near impossible with today's technology. Especially in a crowd of bystanders.

Plus the action of reloading or unjamming a firearm requires a delicate hand-like appendage.

Really? You do know that the US and Israel have extremely effective systems that can shoot down a mortar round/rocket in flight with extremely high accuracy with either laser or projectile.

And why would we have them carry guns? They would be specifically designed in the chassis.

Not to mention on the topic of object identification - self driving cars have been pretty damn accurate in their abilities to recognize and deal with environmental objects. The next step to a system that is extremely competent in that regard is sensor analysis deeper characteristics of the object, what it is made up of, cross referencing it against gigantic libraries of similarly shaped and compositied objects... With good categorization ground work I believe a system programmed in such a manner will be able to correctly identify just about any object.

"I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

They won't replace us, they'll work with us :vaped:

It would be a folly not to pursue cybernetics alongside AI technology - if properly paced, there won't ever really be a point at which the processing power of a pure AI should outpace human capability so far as to make us completely obsolete. But whether that would matter or not also depends on how we program. If we program them to be very empathetic and compassionate machines (which I'm sure many won't be via military.. but the ones that are would protect us) and if programmed with the capability of respect, I imagine at the worst many of them would view us as aloof, but still venerated gods... (in the true sense... we made them) I don't think a proper AI cognition would ever be interested in eradicating us. Only assisting and helping guide on the best path we can collectively follow. Especially if we stay very relevant with upgrades of our own capabilities.

I think you are giving too much credit to humans and society in general.

As the population continues to grows, scarce resources become more scarce. You have to stop population growth first. Once that happens economic growth can only be achieved through productivity gains, but as we are very much over the long term carrying capacity of the earth I assure you it won't be the rich capitalist that die in culls.

although: what's the problem with that?

if the culls die, and die they will, then the rich will soon follow -- all the same death.

I don't see that honestly. Firstly, we design robots, and I don't see a world where creation and programming of anything threatening isn't considered a top government priority, with fail-safes and all sorts of procedural checks. And then that's assuming we make something that thinks like us, which it likely would not be designed to do

 sounds like a good plot for hollywood but I don't think that race/god extermination is going to be as high on the priorities of lifeforms we ourselves shape and birth as we think.

Machines do what they are built/programmed to do.  How idiotic would it be to design a machine extremely efficient at killing living things and then program it to be sentient?? I'm not saying it's impossible but it completely defies logic.

ya this

even if you wanted to make an AI for its intelligence, you would NOT give it a body that posed any threat to humanity, for one.

You speak as if you think their are those out their who don't just want to see the world burn...
Or that there are people out there that don't think humanity's evolution lies in AI.

Hackers bro.... Hackers...

Lol you guys talk like the world is made of rainbows and unicorns.

These people should have already modified and computerized a lawn mower or woodchipper or two, and remotely terrorized their neighborhoods.
You watch too many movies man.

we have the power to end all life on earth. We've had nukes for decades. And yet, oh look at that, we're still here. I think you overestimate the destructive tendencies of the powerful.

The people in charge, who call the shots, they act for their benefit and when it their economic needs, wars and destruction will do, but there must be room for profit. The crazies don't call the shots, they just act as play-things for the real powers out there.

I mean nuclear weapons have been in existence for like 70 years dude.  If there are so many people that are the way you're implying, you'd think they'd have wreaked a bit more havoc.

The main point is, technology has been steadily progressing since the dawn of man.  The majority of technological advances have served mankind.  Yes, we have invented weapons with which to wage war, but those wars were waged with reason.  It's very unlikely that a team of people would engineer a mechanized force of autonomous killing machines that would wipe out the entire race of 7.3 billion humans and climbing.... it just isn't reasonable.  We all have a survival instinct, or we'd have offed ourselves already, no?
