A couple centuries?
This Nation has only existed for a couple centuries.

Give it a decade.

Maybe quicker than I predict, but capitalism is pretty entrenched, and there's a lot of potential for humanity to get sidetracked with wars over oil for decades yet

Not anymore. The value of oil is near worthless now. Because the supply was realized to be more substantial than was thought.

We will not be able to breath before Oil runs out.

A decade is extremely optimistic (as is the notion that our supply of oil is so great that it will outlast us).  You're overestimating humanity's willingness to change and underestimating human greed.

Lol those robots crack me up. They're so stupid they can barely walk. Robots are far far away from taking away even 1% of our jobs. Robots can only do what we program them to do, and until we develop AI it will never happen. Maybe our grandkids or great grandkids will see it start to happen but not us.

hence why I predict change over a couple of centuries.

Currently, for the most part, we could automate all service positions.  It would be far cheaper and more efficient to do so.  So why haven't we?  Because it would be a critical blow to the economy since the service sector is responsible for >50% of employment.  So yeah, a bit over 1%.

How long did it take for cellphone technology to evolve into what it is now?
How long did it take for video games to evolve into the extreme realisticness that they are now, from DOOM.

You be very careful on your time predictions. Evolution of technology is becoming extremely fast.

Look at that robot, the AI that allows it to walk like a human, keep itself up, walk around environments.
You just wait and fuckin see.

I'm with you on that. But we put ourselves in this timeframe and this life for a good damn reason that we would make ourselves put up with this bullshit.

I want to either be in a timeframe with No modern technology, or extremely futuristic technology. Not the salty stages in between.

Eh I think being born in the 50s would be ideal.

Rise of the Robots is on NOVA tonight. I doubt they will go into the long term societal and economic consequences, but who knows.

Here's the thing in a preindustrial society your life would nasty brutish and short. I fear with a far future society we won't even be recognizable as humans. The mid twentieth century in my mind combines the best of both worlds it's modern but you can still earn a good living with your hands. A strong middle class!

I'm fairly confident in my job security at least for the forseeable future. While many parts of my job do involve manual labor. The majority of it is skilled labor. Of the kind that I don't believe would be easily replicated by a robot. At least not any time soon.

Even the manual labor components of my job don't really make up a large enough portion of it to be worth bringing a machine in.

Much larger construction jobs I could see a use for them. But that's about it

NOVA rise of the robots was a pretty good show. The best and brightest robot researchers made robots that can walk on uneven stairs or a ladder, operate a drill, close a valve, open a door and drive a car. They used the example of closing valves during the Fukashima Nuclear meltdown that would have ultimately saved a ton of damage. All the robots had human operators.

Recognizing objects is extremely difficult, and it looked like most of them were pretty tripped up by uneven ground. A goddamn screw on the ground could level these multi-million dollar machines. I wouldn't worry about robots stealing landscaping jobs anytime soon.

 Yeah, it's funny at the moment but I think that the rate of increase will be pretty stunning over the next 20 years as well. Like DOS in the early 90s to today's computers 20 years later.

The one researcher had been working on bi-pedal movement for 20 years. If the robots ever attacked you could put up a 3ft wall around your house and you'd be fine.
