Help treating wilt/wrinkling..underwatering???

I recently bought this cacti I believe it was over watered when purchased

could the wilt be caused from overwatering?

its been about 2 weeks since it's been home

do they react slowly and maybe now it's just showing the wilt from being over watered few weeks ago?

and in a few weeks it will plump back up as long as is treated properly?

I also have no idea what kind of cacti it is

Any help is appreciated

When I think of cacti "wilting" I think of rot which can happen from being over watered.

What size is it? Younger cacti can "wilt" from being overexposed to light in which case they can bounce back once put into milder conditions.

Does the plant feel "squishy" anywhere such as towards its base and or wherever it is wilting?

Some softness is fairly common with cacti but if it is super squishy it could be rot in which case you should act ASAP before it spreads.

I lost a beautiful lil Stetsonia Coymbosa recently after it got frosted then started rotting real bad. If I had dealt with it sooner I may have saved it :shrug:

Well, first things first. Turn that horseshoe up the right way... An upside down horseshoe is bad luck...



The cacti doesn't look to bad, really. Not really sure what that is exactly. Some variegated something, looks like. It almost has an optuna feel to it, but I doubt that is what it is. If your problem you are concerned with is shown as that little missing chunk in your first pic, it looks like an insect or bird may have bit a chunk out of it. I see some of your smaller 'pads', or 'pups' seem to be a bit droopy. But since I don't know what exactly the cacti is, I'm not sure if that is even out of the ordinary for it.

But whatever your problem is, I don't see anything suggesting drastic overwatering...:shrug:

Somebody who really knows their stuff will pop in here soon enough and should be able to help more, though.

Lol my gf put the horse shoe one there...

I'm concerned about the wilt/wrinkling shown

Hard to see kinda..

It's about foot tall I don't think it's very old

It's getting soft, not mushy tho yet

Ah, okay I see the wrinkling now.

Again though, I would associate that more with UNDERwatering rather than OVERwatering. Generally with overwatering, the skin will swell and even split, with underwatering (which IMO isn't really that much of an issue for cacti) the inner tissue contracts as it dehydrates and causes the wrinkles.

It seems the wrinkling is most prominent on some of the older growth, so I wonder too if it might not just be some old growth turning woody with age (which is normal). Now the wilting is another story, but again, I would associate that with underwatering rather than overwatering...


This isn't to say there isn't something else going on I'm not seeing.

How does the flesh feel? Is it soft, like maybe a ripe tomato? Squishy, or oozy? Are the wilted pads floppy?

The flesh is definitely a hair soft

I felt some of the hardwood E flesh its nice and hard and the wrinkly parts are softer

I wouldn't say the wrinkled pads are floppy but he has a few med sized pads that are somewhat floppy but not wrinkled. The only wrinkling I see is at the base

They were being kept cooler kind of in a greenhouse environment and now I move them inside about 2 weeks ago they came inside

My girlfriend thinks he's simply in the wrong kind of soil

When I got it it definitely got a good watering from previous owner we haven't watered it since and it's just now starting to dry out on the top layer of soil

Well, let's wait until one of the senior cacti-heads pop in and say otherwise, but to me I'm hearing and seeing underwatered and not much to worry about. :shrug:

It's definitely a good sign that you say its slightly soft and not mushy. Are you in the northern hemisphere? Winter is on us and most cacti are naturally going into dormancy, so depending on your wintertime plans for it, you might not want to be giving it too much water (if any) anyway.

Either way, I'm thinking this isn't a super serious immediate emergency and the best course of action (even though I'm leaning toward maybe underwatering) would be to not water it or really do anything to it until we get some solid advice on what to do with it. I could probably give more direction if I knew for sure what it was, but I'm not even sure of that. If that were a trich doing that, I'd say maybe give it a slight drink to ease the wrinkles and then put it into dormancy (your climate depending). But that to me kind of has an optuna like look to it.

My girlfriend loves cacti I love mushrooms been growing mushrooms for a while a lot of different gourmets and medicinals... I'd like to get into herbs entheogenic plants and cacti also though

We would love to find out what this little guy is exactly and how to help him the Asian guy couldn't really speak very good English that we bought it from

If anyone knows of any great awesome cacti books that would be much appreciated also thank you again

BTW that's actually really just how they grow. mine has dropped a few pads that wrinkled and shriveled up. I don't think it's much of an issue.

Ok ty, it's not getting much sunlight just re lighting..

We haven't watered it at all since buying it. Is pot size ok?

Needs to be put into winter dormancy maybe. It was in seattle. Brought it home to spokane.

I know bit about fungi but nothing about plants, just trying to help my gf really it was a gift to her

Yea Opuntias are easy to force into dormancy but you do need to give it a little taste of water as it's entering dormancy then the next time you water will be a bit before spring getting it ready for the next growing season.

Update...

I think the cacti was under watered after all

Poor guy looks wayyy worse.

Soil was dry.

Watered him.... Such a sadd sight


What kinda soil mix would u recommend for this guy?

Cacti got replanted,  had severe root rot..

I think it was a case of overwatering, in soil w poor drainage, prob shouldn't have watered fir awhile...

Might not have lost the tap root...
