What's causing this shiitake spore print to be blurry/slurry/gooey

I did my first spore print of a shiitake and when I removed the cap 2 days later it was just a gooey liquid under it. All the spores had blended with the moisture from the mushroom. So you can't see the fine patterns from the gills etc that some people get.

How do you make those pretty prints with visible gills and not this unsofisticated goo?



I used aluminum foil and on that placed an upside down drinking glass to contain the cap. I did put some sheets of household paper (if that's the proper English word) outside the cap so the glass rested on that so as to create some gas/water exchange with the rest of the room since I was expecting this kind of water condensation.

I don't have a great deal of experience, The only thing I can think of might be that the moisture content of the shiitake was too high. Perhaps let it air dry for a day, then try to take the print? I'm sure somebody with more experience will be along soon, and correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, too much moisture is likely what's going on. But if you just put it out in the air you risk that it releases the spores there. So, yeah, back to square one. :smile:

I believe that it will release spores for several days. Letting it dry for eight hours really shouldn't hurt. Perhaps turn the cap upside down and cover it with something. Then after 8 or 12 hours, try getting your spore print.

A lot of edibles make wet prints. Oysters leave a puddle. Remove the fruit and let it dry out in a SAB. Some people use toothpicks to suspend the fruit over the print media. Mainly with edibles we use cultures from the fruit body to propagate a specimen, this ensures you have a more predictable and reliable fruit.
