Anyone for Lithops ???

About a decade ago (yes, I know some of you were still at school) I bought a few Lithops - my main interest is Mexican desert cacti, but they made a fun change.

I totally neglected them, left them out on my terrace all year round - they certainly did not get the TLC that my Mexican cacti did. Most of them passed on, but this one, L. verruculosa, stubbornly clung to its tenuous existence, and just grew larger every year - it is now a very impressive clump. I am very pleased with it.

Amazing that that grew out of a single plant a decade ago.

However it would be fun to see what other Lithops are around.

I had my first go with lithops and titanopsis last year. Didn't have much luck with germination rates and eventually everything that did grow soon died....

So I'm gearing up for another attempt this winter.

Do you have any advice on soil mix composition and whatnot?

some lithops have transparent tops.

I always wanted Lithops as a kid. Never got any for some reason. Very nice specimen you've got there.

I think there needs to be a non-ethnobotanical gardening forum though. This forum is only ever like 50% discussions of actual ethnobotanicals. It gets confusing.

Nice. looks similar to a brain. I've never actually seen them growing in "clumps" like that before. I'm hoping to purchase a few in the spring when new plant shipments come in to the local nurseries.

awesome pic.

if thats the "living rock" cactus , then i planted 10 seeds last fall. Had 5 pop up, after my planter dropped (kids....)i only have 2 remaining.... Im excited how they look when they mature

As of reading this post, the 16 of the top 20 threads are threads pertaining to true ethnobotanicals, that's 80%. Most of us have varied collections and frankly I like to see anything cacti and succulent related here in addition to the ethnobotanicals. It would be pretty fucking boring if there garden were nothing but weed grows and active cacti ID requests. :shrug:

There is a non-ethno forum set up, has been for many years. It's just not as good as this one. We have hobby gardeners right through to qualified people who work in the industry. We cater to all plants and would love to see more variety.

As for Lithops, I have a soft place in my vine riddled heart for them. I grew these from seed back in 2009. They died 2 years ago due to me moving and not being able to provide a sheltered spot for the Winter.

Damned that is a tragedy Karode. I have not been able to get the (red) opticas to germinate. I may have just had bad seed or bad luck. Am willing to try again. I LOVE the Opticas. I too have a soft spot for living stones and mesembres in general.

Mesembs are hard. I had lithops for years when I lived in the SW, left them outside in the elements and they thrived on utter neglect. Since I moved out of the desert though, whew! They are finicky. Seems like if you get their rhythm down right they do all right, but reading into it it sounds like each species has a slightly different watering schedule and man, one false move and they are toast.
