None of the states in which I. alvarius is (or was) indigenous – California, Arizona, and New Mexico – legally allows a person to remove the toad from the state. For example, the Arizona Game and Fish Department is clear about the law in Arizona: "An individual shall not... export any live wildlife from the state; 3. Transport, possess, offer for sale, sell, sell as live bait, trade, give away, purchase, rent, lease, display, exhibit, propagate... within the state..."[17]

In California, I. alvarius has been designated as "endangered" and possession of this toad is illegal. "It is unlawful to capture, collect, intentionally kill or injure, possess, purchase, propagate, sell, transport, import or export any native reptile or amphibian, or part thereof..."[18]

In New Mexico, this toad is listed as "threatened" and, again, taking I. alvarius is unlawful.[19][20]

There's also a ton of resources online.

I fucking love Axies!

Though, you know, they're endangered in the wild too.

But they're used so often in lab testing that there will never be a shortage of captive breeding.

Yup, I mentioned that :borat:

I don't have any, but someone I know does and they're so cool looking, one day I would love to have one or two.

I've heard that too, but I think because there are a lot in captivity that they're still considered "endangered" rather than extinct.

Still a shame.

I believe there's one or two lakes left in Mexico that they live in.

I may be wrong though.

I fucking love amphibians :stoned:

strictly numbers, no not endangered... i guess maybe the wrong word. protected, maybe? in any case, certainly reason to argue against capture. though we used to catch them all the time, never kept them as a pet.

It is legal to collect Colorado river toads in Az. with a current fishing license. There are several good collecting spots at the south/east spot of the state. There is also a famous road south of Chandler that was very good. I believe the legal limit in the state is 20 in possesion. I found my spots in part due to the over whelming support from the local fish & game officers. They fear this is a very destructive species. But on the other hand one of the most impressive animals you will ever discover. This toad will actually charge at you and can run at a fast pace. I lived in Prescott Az. for three years and fell in love with those monsoon nights. I still enjoy looking at my collecting notes from those years. They get me through the cold Maine nights.
