Maybe make a frog cage out of a rooms corner and add some plants familiar to the toad. :wink:
I always wanted one too but could only find dried specimens... no thanks lol

my opinion, without knowing much other than from personal experience... id say yes, unethical. but would i do it, maybe? its hard for me to say though, because where i grew up i could just as easily catch and release as far as the venom goes. i never thought of keeping them as a pet, but provided you provide a decent environment and dont milk the shit out of it all the time, i dont see why not.

that toad isn't endangered at all.  not sure what you're going on about.

Its just restricted to sell out of state because its filled with drugs.

edit: yes its unethical to capture endangered species.  unless u really want it, who gives a fuck the species is dying anyway.

just on the grounds that you are taking it out of the wild... that by iself is reason enough. but like i said, take good care of it and i dont see a problem with it really. but as far as ethical or not, it still isnt the best, in my opinion.

they're native to tx. one of my friend's kids caught one awhile back and had it as a pet.

Has anyone owned one before? Is it hard to care for? I have much experience with snakes, Im sure some of those skills and knowledge will translate to toad care...

I also cant find a vendor with this species..

But if I did find a vendor with live Bufo alvarius should I grab a pair? Do they make good pets? Im not worried about/planning to milk them fyi, I just love the toad.

Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times yes.


Honestly, if you want something cool, amphibious and rare/endangered then get an axoltl. There are tons of ethical breeders, it's legal and they're not too hard to care for. They're mega cool, and once they get past their "cannabalism phase" you can get a pair.






There's also a ton of resources online.

They dont seem any harder than snakes to care for..
Just increase the humidity and provide enough water submerge the toad.
In a nutshell thats the difference.
Ive cared for 2 snakes for years so I can handle this endevour just fine I think. :thumbup:

Now just wrestling with the fact that %99.9999999 of Bufo alvarius are stolen from the wild... :uhoh:
