My thoughts are that an alcohol lamp is free-standing(no hands) and that a butane lighter leaves a black soot on the needle :wink:.

Well does the Black Soot that is left on the needle by the butain lighter affect the mushrooms in any way ???

It might pick up contaminants easier;other than that both ways will work. Use what is available.
