What am I doing wrong? -Mimosa pudica
    #21635333 -

Is there something I am doing wrong trying to sprout Mimosa pudica? I have been through 4 different sources of seed of this plant, and not once have I had the first sprout...  What gives?

I haven't been doing anything special to sprout them (no humidity dome, no hormones). I just have been doing a standard "sow seeds and keep moist" approach with no luck.

Is this just a streak of bad luck from seed sources, or am I doing something obviously wrong with this species?

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

No. You're doing it wrong my friend.

You should be soaking the seeds overnight in warm water to break seed dormancy before sowing. The seeds will swell and then they'll be ready for planting.

Thanks, karode. KGB, PMed me too suggesting even nicking the seed coat as well.

Thanks to the both of you for your help. I have started another batch today with nicking. They are soaking right now. In a couple days I will plant them (whenever they start swelling).

Thanks a ton, you two!

Nicking them or sanding off a small part of the seed coat will cause them to swell faster, just be careful not to nick them too deeply!

You guys were spot on... 24 hours after nicking and soaking the last of my seeds, They are swelling and 2 of them already are sprouting out. I have planted those 2 and will wait on the others to sprout until I plant them as well!

Thanks again for the tips!  Maybe as the plant grows I will keep the thread going with updates so everybody can see my ignorance turning into a success!  I know they are nothing too special, but I've wanted one of these plants for years now...

Honestly, years ago I did have that mentality. Maybe I am just getting old, but I'm starting to appreciate other plants too like nice flowers, or other just neat looking plants. I think to a degree, I still only like growing plants that do something for me. Fruits and veggies give me something to eat, herbs for seasoning, 'special' plants that give us medicines, but now also, flowers for visual enjoyment and neat other plants like pudica that give some other type of enjoyment.

Maybe it stems from the way I was taught when I was young. Anything you put time and effort needs to give something back to you. If you keep a dog around the house, he has a job to do to earn his keep - protect the house. A cat keeps down the pest population. Chickens for eggs and meat. The plants you work so hard to keep alive need to give you something back, too. I guess it just too a while for my understanding of the concept to evolve into the realization that the something that you get in return for your efforts can simply be enjoyment or even visual appeal.

IDK, maybe I am rambling and just alone in that sentiment, but sometimes I feel like I'm an old (or maybe just old fashioned) person in a young person's body...    Ok - weird rant over...

I have gravitated to growing mostly plants I can utilize, fruits, and veggies, but I do have a small collection of plants purely for aesthetic purposes,my cacti and houseplants,to be exact.
I just tend not to collect too much of them any more, because as cool as they look, they take up space that could be used for other food producing plants:cool:

Update time -
6 days from emergence of the tallest one. The others followed over the next two days

The smaller two don't seem too well. I'll just attribute it to damping off I guess. I'm just glad to have made it this far with em.
