    #3099608 - 09/06/04 05:28 PM (17 years, 1 month ago)

There are many wild mimosa's growing wild in NY and I was wondering if anyone knows the species and if its active. They have fluffy flowers that are white in the center and have pink ends.

Those sound like albizia to me, not a true mimosa. Right family, wrong genus.

Nope he's not, everyone calls trees that look like that mimosa. I live in NJ we have htose trees, people call them mimosa. They're not really mimosa. They're a mimosoid, meaning they look like mimosa (you konw, like humanoid), but they're definitely not mimosa. That's just what people call them cause they don't really know any better.

I dont believe that I am wrong. Mimosa is the common name. It is in the legume family but the genus is albizia. its extremely common and I've made several posts on it in the past. It comes up here a lot.

Mimosa is Mimosa.. mimosa pudica, mimosa hostilis, mimosa scabrella, etc etc

but mimosa is also the common name for a large shrub/small tree that is commonly called Mimosa by common name. Aka Silk Tree. The species is Albizia julibrissin (i believe that is the correct epitath). It IS infact in the legume/fabacea family though.

Even though its not an active species it is still claimed to have very special properties.. do some research, youll find a lot.
