my mimosa (pic)

got it as a sprout and grew it in my porch till it was tall and spindly, planned to clone the top but it wouldnt root so i topped it and put it in a better window. it spent half the summer outside and is starting to come back, it was practically a stick for a while (and 10 ft high all slumped over)
its filling out a bit tho, going back outside into a 20 gal pot in the late spring.

it often flowers but ive been clipping them off to conserve energy flowers come in small green spheric clusters then become yellow and fuzzy before falling off.

any idea the species?



i bought it at a greenhouse that carries evrything from opium poppies to datura. and don't even seem to know what they have for the most part.

the mimosa was sold as "silk tree(mimosa)" on the tag $4.99
each canadian. they had one that had a trunk as big around as my leg and covered with beans from which all the cuttings came.

well, im pretty sure its mimosa scabrella.
i know its active, but how active? will a rootbound 20 gal pot yeald enough rootbark to manufacture elf spice?

Hmmmm you got me baffled by two remarks

As far as i know the Silk tree is not even Mimosa!!! Its latin name is Albizia julibrissin. I think they are in the same family but certainly not a mimosa...

Usually Albizias develop Silky pink vlowers that look like a bunch of silk hair..Does the flower look like that : http://www.gardenshop.gr/fyta/library/gazia.htm

If it is then you have a Gazia (In Greek) ,Acacia farnesiana in good ol' Latin....

Silk trees are not active, sorry. There are many species of mimosas and related species. Do the leaves fold up at night? If not, it isn't a scabrella. I have m scabrella seeds if you want to swap for them. I also have sensitive plant seeds which are really cool plants and have some actives in the rootbark also.

Is that Mimosa Pudica? Funny..i Didnt know it has actives....

Also many Mimosas are reputed to also have active foliage....Too bad noone reasearches this!

By they way,look into succulents as well such as Delosperma Cooperi. Trout at Trout's Notes has an excellent PDF on them!

Funny you should mention that, I have d cooperii and d bosseranum seeds also. They are succulents with effects like those of kanna or sceletium. The leaves and roots are used. I'm growing d bosseranum outside right now.

pudica has no activity.
and yes my mimosa scabrella has leaves that fold up at night.
im quite sure of the species
at this point.

in flower it looks just like this
i mean, exactly like this. even the way the new flowers project outward then turn fuzzy and yellow.

Albizia julibrissin is an extremely common plant down here in the South(zone 9a). Aneg had made a post about them quite some time ago and I believe they do contain some kind of activity. They're very beautiful in flower, but make my allergies go haywire  :tongue:.

I've seen a couple reports that say pudica has some activity. I haven't tested it myself.

Scrabella is easy to sprout, I am dispapointed to admit I still havent sprouted a single hostilis seed. (and I am running out of chances)
