Virus' and hard drives....
    #2159161 - 12/04/03 06:54 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Alright, origional post un-thoughtout. I have a drive that is infected and refuses to accept an antivirus program. I propose to take this drive to a computer that has antivirus. How do i ensure that the virus doesn't spread to the clean drive while attemptig to destroy it?

The only way for a drive to cause any damage when you're not booting from it is for the virus to reside in the boot sector. There are BIOS settings for this and also norton recovery disks you can use. You could always use the command fdisk /mbr to rewrite the master boot record, which will get rid of ANY boot sector virus, but if the virus resides on the drive as part of windows, simply put it in another computer as a slave and boot from your master, then run a virus scanner over it. You should be safe from infecting the other computer as long as you don't execute anything on the drive.

When you do a clean install and repartition the drive, would that also destroy a boot sector virus?

This is incorrect. It will get rid of any boot sector virus if the virus is not running in memory. There are boot sector infectors that remap the real bootsector to an alternate location on the disk. The fdisk command thinks it is writing to LBA 0, but actually writes somewhere else.

For cases where I have trouble cleaning a virus from a disk, I install the disk into a box that runs unix. From unix you can partition the drive, write a boot sector, newfs the drive, etc... while the virus is completely harmless... once done, you can put the drive back into your winblows box and reinstall.

Or, get a linux bootable CD and perform the aforementioned actions without having to build the harddisk out.
