I think you might need to register for a microsoft passport to make it work.
It's been Dugg, so I don't know if it's still working, but it appears to be.

I doubt they could stop you from reformatting it. Especially in Linux, where you can use hdparm to mess with flash drives in some fun ways, like rearranging the geometry.

nice - you rule. not worried about write-protection can always reformat, esp. using linux as supercollider said.

hey, speaking of this, i've got a flash drive that's got some kind of software built in. U3 i think it's called. i have no use for it (i don't use it on windows and it doesn't do anything on linux) and i'd like to get rid of it. i don't know how.
the flash drive is recognized by computers as a FAT partition for storage, and then there's a read-only part that is recognized as a CD-ROM where the U3 software resides. i can't seem to break into the thing and reformat it all for my purposes. how might i do that?

What have you tried so far? If fdisk or the zillion other partition editors won't let you do it (in Ubuntu you'll probably want to use gparted) then try installing the "mbr" package via APT. Run "mbr /dev/sda" if /dev/sda is your flash drive. That puts a master boot record on it, and has the side effect of killing the partition table that's on it already. Then try gparted, fdisk, or whatever again.

Hehe me too. I wonder if anyone actually got theirs.
Someday this will seem as quaint as lining up for free AOL floppies.
