DUNEDIN NEW ZEALAND ID REQUEST 2015

Hey there!

I haven't found a Dunedin thread on here so I thought I would start some for fellow Dunedinites.

First time hunter and hoping tonight will be my first shroom experience :smile:

Me, my girlfriend and an experienced friend went out on a hunt today on the Otago Peninsula, down some AMAZING scenic walks to look for some mushrooms. We had a good find(well we think we did) but I'm wanting to confirm out thoughts about our find.

All of what we found was among a grassy, tussock covered area. From what we had heard we would be looking for Psilocybe semilanceata(Liberty Caps).

Here is a photo of what the area looks like where we found them.





I should have gotten photos of them before we picked them but we had limited time to hunt and didn't really consider it.

So to confirm, most of these are active? None are poisonous?

None are active. If you are looking for actives, you probably won't have much luck in a field. Look in wood chip areas and forests with a lot of woody debris. Season is starting shortly, you might get lucky and find a few now. You'll be looking for Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Good luck!

Ahh awesome. Good to know before we dug in :P We've been on the hunt for subs the past week but haven't had any luck. We knew it was still early for them so decided to try find Liberty caps on the peninsula since we had heard they grow up there round this time of year. Bit gutting to hear their not active but hey, still early days :wink:

ID Request please. Pretty sure these are subs. Would appreciate a confirmation.

All found in a dense forest in Dunedin. Forgot good camera again while we were out, here are some pictures of them once we got home.

Sorry they're not subs. Looks like Laccaria sp. Psilocybe Subaeruginosa bruise distinctly BLUE shortly after picking. If they don't, they're not subs. Good luck and keep checking for confirmation.

My photo's do not do these any justice. Today is overcast and i cannot get enough natural light for good photos. We've just taken them to an experienced shroom hunter and he is positive they are subs. He even tasted one and said they taste perfect. The ones you have linked have lighter gills then what we have, ours are a milk chocolate coloured. We have quite a few that have blue bruising at the base of the stem.

The mushrooms in those pics are definitely not subs, bro.

Chuck them out and keep trying.

Lacklustre photo quality taken aboard, the gills, stipe and pileus don't look right for subs. Please don't consume these or the only trip you'll be making will be to the toilet.

CERTAINLY not Psilocybe subaeruginosa or anything active. Your 'experienced hunter' is clearly not experienced at all. They might even be an Inocybe species, so please do not consume those.

Trusting is hard. Do not put faith in your mushrooms. Do not look for reason not to be incorrect.
If somebody here, specifically in this board in this forum, says something.. it really is best to believe it.

I'm pretty sure there are liberty caps (Psilocybe semilanceata) which grow on the Dunedin peninsula. You should be able to find these in fields out there in the right conditions. Otherwise look for 'subs' in bark chip gardens as recommended above. If you do some research as to what they look like you should be able to increase your chances of finding active rather than inactive mushrooms.

Yeah, there are. Didn't really take note of the fact that he's in Dunedin. P. subaeruginosa grow pretty much all over the country and bruise much more clearly so I'd rather advise him to look for those. But P. semilanceata are out there in the South too.

The weather in Dunedin seems to be a little too warm. Recent cold snaps are a good indication that the season will be starting soon. The most abundant actives in Dunedin are likely P. subaeruginosa, because they are easiest to find. P. semilanceata can be found in the high grass lands of Otago but the season is yet still too young. Also has anyone managed to find P. Weraroa or subsecotioides this far south?

None of the mushrooms you've posted are 'magic'. Your experienced hunter doesn't know what he's talking about and you shouldn't listen to him. I've hunted active mushrooms in NZ for over 20 years and I'm telling you honestly that you have nothing of any value. Do not eat them or feed them to other people.

You should read this post, it's written for South Australia but has some good hunting tips and pictures of subs. Good tips for not destroying patches as well.

Flick through the pictures in this thread so you have a good idea what subaeruginosa looks like. That way you don't have to pick non-actives.

What Psilocybe Subaeruginosa is that?

Found in Dunedin. 166 grams total, this is my half. 2nd lot in past week. Season in on! Had an amazing time on Monday night :wink:
