Bonsai Peruvian Torch?
    #21386833 -

Using the "Neglect Tek" I have managed to grow 3+ year old specimens that are 2 1/2 to 3" tall. If I can green them up and keep them short and stocky, I'd like to put them in a display. Has this been tried (I'm a noob) before and if so, can it be a successful endeavor? Some of the specimens had soft rot underneath but these three don't want to succumb to death by any means.

I don't mean to offense you particularly but I'm getting tired of these feet and meaningless units. You are talking to an international community of people so please start using international metric unit system. Thanks a lot.

6.5-7.5cm is 2.5-3 inches, and 3 years is 3 years in metric as well.

:zomgteehee:

so all you have to do is treat something like shit so it wont grow well and you call it a bonsai?!

I wouldn't call it a bonsai. Id say Its not growing well. When it flowers at that size then I may consider calling it a bonsai but still not really.

Bonsai: an ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size.

Meaningless, seriously?
Well then, an international community should be free to use whatever system they want. Am I wrong?

Plenty of people are more familiar with the US system (myself included), over metric.
The legitimacy of, and whether or not someone should use a certain measurement system isn't your call.

Now, whether or not the metric system is superior...is another story.

First off, you should get rid of the red spider mite problem I suspect is affecting your plants, the one on the right in particular. Regular spraying will keep it under control, a neem oil application will be more definite.

Next, I'm not sure you can bonsai plants that have evolved to thrive in minute amounts of soil like those found in crevices of rock outcrops. I suspect the usual nutrient/water/space starvation won't work and the plants will just keep growing out of anything they can get, but that's a totally unfounded opinion. By all means, try it. Confine their roots to the smallest possible container (not easy if you are thinking of displaying them) and water just enough to keep them from going soft. Keep records.

Many bonsai techniques are applicable to growing cacti in unique fashion. You can keep your cactus small, you can train it to grow in rather strange directions with wire, and selectively prune the plant to obtain interesting results. The bonsai community might not call it Bonsai, per say. But, that doesn't mean that we can't use the term loosely. It doesn't bother me he uses the term.

Standard Chinese is also known as Mandarin which is the Northern and Southwestern Chinese dialect.

Dude chill out. We are AMERICAN. As long as I have been alive I have always used standards. If you ain't got a converter on your phone, leave it alone. Period. This is a stupid thing. I know the majority on here is international and I try to accommodate bit I have never ever been told to use centimeters instead i
of inches.

Shame on you. Ignorance on your part. :nonono:

I can't believe that an innocent question raised so much of a stink. Thanks for all of the useful information you guys. To you other folk, carry on with whatever you "carry on " with.

BTW, This isn't the pub.

I thought that I saw somewhere that there was a way to keep them diminutive in size (I only used the metric system back in college 34 years ago).

Thanks Ferrel Human and LSoares and prismism. The whiteness on these guys came from over spray of azadirachtin. Apparently they didn't like it. What indicates the spider mite problem? That's what I got the azadirachtin for anyway. I'll find some neem oil.

Thanks for the polite responses.

People bonsai jade plants all the time and they're succulents.  I joke to myself that all of my trichos are bonsai because my light levels keep them pretty small and thin.  Relatively anyway.  A big component of a true bonsai is cutting the taproot and trimming the roots in order to keep them small, and training their shape to make them look much older than they are.  The RSM damage if you get rid of the bastards will aid in that "rustic" look.  Cut their taproots, let them callous and then pot them in the smallest container that will keep them upright and you're definitely on your way to having peruvianus bonsai.

My point was just that we use the international language so why not international units ?
I can still put a number in the google converter tho.
