Growth Rate of Peruvian Torch
    #2000516 - 10/11/03 03:45 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I was just wondering about the growth rate of a peruvian torch started from seed. How long has it took some of you to grow this thing to 5 feet? I realize cacti are very slow at growing and wanted to know from some actual experiences with this particular cacti. How adaptable was it to your outdoor climate and how long did it take to reach 3-5 feet tall?

I'd say 2-4 years.

Not as long as I thought. San Pedro is definitely a bit slower I think. So what would be the advantages of growing San Pedro vs. Peruvian Torch. It's said Peruvian Torch is faster growing and more potent also. I can see the only adavntage being that you may want a variety to work with. I suppose I would enjoy growing both but most of them would be Peruvian Torch unless someone could convince me otherwise.

Eh... They grow at almost the same rates and the potency is debatable. Most people will tell you they're equaly potent and that it vairies from cactus to cactus. I see about a foot to a foot and a half of growth a per summer from my San Pedro if I keep up with fertilizing and watering.

Wow that's pretty good considering I've heard that others do not grow fast at all. You must take very good care of your cactus. I assume many others neglect their cactus and see unsatisfactory results because of this. What kind of fertilizer do you use? Do you think Super Thrive would be good for it? How about frequency of watering? We have had lots of rain this year as opposed to previous years(I'm in NC mountains). I bet all that rain would stump growth in cacti.

I'm growing Peruvians from seed. They are now 4 years old and are only 4 inch high and 1 inch width. But I only let them grow for 3 months a year (because of the climate I live in) Next year I can finally give them some better conditions, in which they can grow 4-5 months a year.
I expect much faster growth next year.

growth rate sucks until they get about 1 ft tall, which could take 3 years. They will be skinny and small and slowly get bigger and fatter until they finally take off. I would reccomend cuttings for this reason.

Awww, that depresses me. I was going to start a gigantic cactus collection from seed. Oh well... I'm still going to : P

Well get some cuttings first then start lots of seeds, it will be the best of both worlds.

i got a rooted cutting, and i threw it in some dirt about 2 months ago and i'd say its up about 2inches from when i started.
