Peruvian Torch Find!

Some guy locally is selling me that Y-shaped Peruvian Torch in the middle for 30 bucks! I was wondering, if I cut both those top sections off to replant them, will new ones grow from that beat up base part?

Those do not look like Trichocereus to me.

Really? Hmm..I guess I should make sure of this before I get ripped off. He says they're a Century plant, Peruvian Torch, San Pedro, and another Peruvian Torch. Is he trying to gip me? Should I get more pictures?

more pics wouldnt hurt if its not that much trouble. the ribs look a bit thin on all of them but i wouldnt rule them out just yet. one of the more advanced IDers will tell you for sure.

Yes, you can cut the top two off and callous then plant them and the base will grow new pups.

They look to be Trichocereus, although they look more bridgesoid than peruvianoid. They also look kinda thirsty. :peace:

that grower must be one of the people that think cacti don't need water :nonono:

offer him $20 for it, it is in really poor condition.

and ya it is hard to say exactly what it is, but all the cacti in that photo appear to be trichocereus.

you might want to find some less acidic soil as ive read thats what causes cactus to turn yellow.

those cacti lack everything, rootspace, water, nutrients... i don't think it has anything to do with the acidity of the soil in this case.

WOW those could be nice if you purchase them and give them what they need.

you can make a few cuts out of the Y one.

cut off at the V and make two, then cut off where the shoot comes off the main and youll have 3 cuttings with a big fat main stalk that should pup (this is just my opinion tho)

offer him $30 for everything, make sure he knows he has nice cacti, but hes beaten them so much its gonna take a lot of work to bring them back to health.

is there a reason they all slant?

did he plant them diagonally? was he afraid to stand them upright when he planted them :lol:

Thanks for all your input guys. They definitely need repotting, the reason he's getting rid of it for $30 is because he has too many and he's neglecting a few. I was thinking of transplanting one of the cuttings off the Y and perhaps ingesting the other. :crazy2:

Would the potency of a cutting be affected by its condition or should one of those have me tripping nicely? Also, how long do you think it would take under good conditions (after replanting in better soil) for them to recover?

ur last question, im not sure if its answerable.

and i know theres always debate about whether or not a neglected cactus has a higher concentration of the "good stuff"

but if it IS what the guy says it is, then a nice 12" cut should do the trick...but how could you :frown:

but if those are 2" bricks, then i dont think one arm of the Y is 12"

cut the two arms and use the center cut piece (of the 3 cuts i was explaining earilier) and then you got some sexy tips to replant :thumbup:

Those are 3" bricks. Nobody can tell me for sure if its a Peruvian? Any specific areas I should I ask him to take pics of that would help ID it for sure? He seems certain its a Peruvian, and he doesn't sound like he's trying to rip me off.
He's selling it for $20 bucks so long as I repot at least 1 of the cuttings. He is very respectful of the cactus, it seems. He refers to them as his "babies" and such. As in, "I just want someone who can take care of my baby" and "don't eat all of her...save a cutting or two and I'll give it to you for $20". Cool guy..spacey as all hell, but cool :tongue:

it's in too poor condition to say for sure if it is t. peruvianus, i would say from the pics that it probably is and if not then it may be t. bridgesii or even a long spined t. pachanoi...

its definately one of the three and all 3 species are worthy :yesnod:
