What to expect from a cynic
    #21299383 -

Cynicism is a branch of philosophy. Some are more cynical than others.

A Cynic Will:
1. Question your ideas
2. Mock your ideas
3. Reduce your ideas to absurdity
4. Doubt you could ever come up with a good idea
5. ?

A Cynic Will Not:
1. Entertain your ideas or try to understand your perspective
2. Be concerned about how you feel about them, positive or negative
3. Be convinced or persuaded
4. Give a flying fuck about why you are so excited about your idea
5. Show concern for your feelings when they explain how you are wrong
6?

Well, you seem to be characterizing every cynic as to be the one's you've experienced.
So, most of that is not mutually exclusive. Those things are not inherent to being cynical, those things are inherent to being mean.

A cynic can do all 9 things you listed plus a myriad of other things.

Basically what Tropism beat me to. As a cynic I am offended by xFrockx thread!

Then what is inherent to being cynical? How have I not basically just described it with examples?

Cynics do have a kind of ironic involvement with what they hate...

I don't think cynicism necessitates hate. If I'm wrong, then I take back calling myself as a cynic.

Yeah pretty much. How is having a higher stander of proof really synonymous with being an ass?
People can be cynical of your view point, have a multitude of ways to debase a belief, but won't use it offensively or even offer it unless asked.
Some cynics still understand the damage words can do, especially when pointed at beliefs.
Should that compassion then eliminate their cynicism?  :wow:

You seem to have cynicism confused with skepticism, though being a skeptic doesn't necessitate some of the things on your list. As a cynic I understand you are just venting your frustrations. As a skeptic I'm not sure you know what you're talking about.

I replied to this post because I felt like it. I'm not sure it will do any good.

A cynic doubts the sincerity or goodness of human motives.  They play the role of a watchdog of humanity, hounding people for the errors of their ways... They'll certainly mock conventional society, moralists, etc. OP is fine imo

About half the things in his list are skeptical, not cynical. A few of them are just mean.

I did clarify the difference in my reply.

Well, emotional damage for starters.
I described being mean, so words can be as effectively damaging as
A) the one who wields them has ability and
B) the level of defenses of the recipient.

I'd also wager if we check the history books we could put together a case that words at some point have been psychologically damaging given the immense amount of incidents people use words maliciously against one another, and the variety of relationships and scenarios they do it in.
Yeah one's emotions are their own responsibility, resultant of condition, etc, yadayada, but let's not pretend people don't get hurt when their beliefs are ripped out of their arms and crushed.

I for one often hold my tongue, mostly because I'm concerned about my own feelings but also because I understand people hold opinions for reasons that aren't often clear or approachable in any beneficial sense. It might be best to leave things be, but in the big scheme one must examine whether sooner is better than later, the cost of carrying that "karma" and whether it will ever go away. Being cynical doesn't mean one doesn't care about others, only that we do it for selfish reasons, and we suppose the things others do is selfish as well. Being skeptical doesn't mean one doesn't care, only that one is not sure of outcomes and when one acts they should be prepared for unintended consequences.

OP describes a curmudgeon, cynical and skeptical to a fault and too broken to generally be looked upon fairly or give treatment in kind.
