What is a good ratio for spawning bulk substrate with oyster grain spawn ? Anybody got a some experience with that ?

I dont have a number. But if you are doing some thing like straw logs just take a bail of pasteurized straw. Spread it out on a peace of ply wood and mix a few bags of spawn into it. Then start filling the bags. If you see some straw that dosnt have much spawn , give it some more. More spawn = quicker colonization.

It?s a good idea to use 10-20% wet weight of spawn to dry weight of substrate. My bales of straw average at around 16Kg dry, so it?s recommended to use 2-4Kg of wet spawn. I tend to lean towards high spawning rates because it?s so cheap when you make it yourself.

Sound good. Yea you get 80 pounds of rye for 7 bucks hear. And bags are under .20 when you buy a shit load. Its so cheap. Always make lots of spaw. I will try your ratio next time.

Shit. I have spawned a 10 liter bucket of coffee grounds with 33 wooden dowels. Does not seem much ? Will that work ?

that sounds like 2 handfuls of dowels. If that's correct, that sounds like it would be minimal for 10 litres. It would work but it may just take a long time to colonize. 10 litres sounds like alot.

Yes, must have been about 2 handful of dowels.

10 litres sounds like alot.

have found a really good supply of coffee grounds from a restaurant. Could fill still about eight 10 liter bucks now. But I will have to create a lot of spawn soon, before trich is going to win the race against time.
What do you think would be the best way to go in order to create enough spawn for this kind of bulk substrate very fast? Do not have any experience with this.

When I first tried using coffee grounds, it took awhile to fully colonize and fruit. Once I got fruit, I cloned the strain. The next time I used coffee grinds, I used the cloned strain. It went super fast. Make sure you capture your strain and store it on distilled water. The mycelium has a memory interspecific to substrate.

Thanks, for this tips. I will definitely try that. I just have started liquid substrate of Pleurotus pulmonaris. The next time I will add some coffee ground to the liquid substrate. Maybe that speeds up colonization too.
