Dowel spawn on rye?

Do most gourmet mushrooms start out with rye? Particularily, shiitaki, hericium, maitaki, reishi, oyster? Basically, rye to straw, wood?
Thanks.
Will be searching for ggmm, but in the meantime, need to know if rye is the next step for dowel spawn.

If you want you can do rye, sawdust, dowel, but I have found that rye to dowel is fine.

Here's how it goes:
Agar--->liquid culture--->rye--->bulk substrate

I have dowel spawn. Actually, 10 dowels of each named above. The next step, to make more spawn, would be rye, correct? Can you use dowel to fruit also? As in rye to dowel?

I have serched everywhere, other than buying ggmm, and getting info is like pulling teeth. Can someone please explain their process here? I know about agar, and rye spawn, its the substrate prep I am concerned with. And local sources that would carry these substrates.

You can:

- put a dowel on agar, agar to grain , grain to whatever...
- put a dovel to grain, the grain to whatever...

The second route is more risky since the dovels are not allways completely contamination free.

Dowels are not used for fruiting directly. They are used to inoculate logged tree stems.

Thank you Anno once gagin. I was hoping to avoid having to go to agar, but its looking like that is the only option, if I am to avoid contaminants.
