i didnt see a 'pro-OTD reform' thread in this forum.
the only thread in this forum that relates is against OTD reform.

what was the "cheers forum"?
it was a SECRET invite only forum.
why was the "cheers forum" shut down?
because the admins eventually felt it was a big form of elitism this site could have. what they thought was a good idea turned into a bad idea., they didnt want 'elitism' at the bb.

my point being, the 'shroomery staff', is showing the same very elitism with all this secret talk in secret forums, that the talk of 'community' is nothing more than a sham.

this forum's title is "Shroomery Feedback and Administration"

why even have a feedback forum when the 'communities' crys' fall on deaf ears?

Please don't think that we aren't listening. That was not the impression I meant to give - I only wanted to stress that we are going to try something even though a lot of people may oppose the action. Trying something is never permanent and is only being done to help evaluate whether or not a change really is necessary. The ball is in your court so to speak, if people can hang and display decency and common respect than OTD probably won't even change noticeably.

The bottom line is we have not decided if and when we are going to make any changes. Thus, I think the question of whether OTD is changing in the first play is quite relevent to the matter of why it is (or is not) changing. You can bring in the calvary if and when we decide to change OTD - which we have not yet done. The placeholder thread in OTD should help to give an idea of what we are trying to accomplish - but at this point we cannot be specific because this is an ongoing situation.

We are one of the first type of sites of this nature. And people go start a new site and surpass us in mycological content. Tell me what our mission statement is. This is a site for mycology and we've gotten extremely off topic. Its not just OTD either. We have the right priorities, just in the wrong places.

So you're listening to our opinions, they just don't matter to you.


I want to thank you again for making it so clear as to why this is being done. I'd love to go and check out the thread explaining things, but I'm not allowed to.

I feel as though I've been betrayed by the administration. The vast majority of OTD users opposed censorship, I didn't even get a chance to find out how many wanted it eliminated altogether.

OTD has been on the Shroomery longer than almost all the other forums. It's sad to see that the current administration has no respect for the opinions of its users or the institutions of free speech that made it great in the first place.

I keep hearing community this and Community that, OTD was the first forum for the Community. All the other forums were strickly business.

Even when the forums were first split into classifacations OTD was listed under community. It was the heart of the cummunity and still is...well was the heart of the community. The only reason I and a VAST majority of people stuck around here was because of OTD and the community.

True I was first drawn to the shroomer for info about mushrooms and I got it in spades. But after i had my fill then what? Read the same posts being made day in and day out by everyone else looking for info?
Its the reason I gave up the modship, I couldn't handle answering the same question 5 times a time.

So just like when I got tired of the business forums I went into OTD and I knew I was home. I've met some of the best people in the world via OTD and the community here.

Honestly if you remove OTD you remove the community, flames and negitivity were abound in there but just like in any other community. The pub is nice if you don't mind always goose stepping around and faking a big smile. Its not "real" like OTD was, it feels fake and ingenuine there. Sure i post there from time to time but its never been the same as crazy as it sounds.

I dunno what else to say that hasn't. Everyone keeps talking about the community, well shit it looks like the current admin team and "staff" don't want a community they want an information site. If thats what you want then go ahead and do it, but don't half ass it. Just removing OTD and not the pub or the gathering forum or any of the other social forums is like beating someone half to death then leaving him in the salt flats a million miles from anyone and anything. He still may be alive but he'll die a slow and very painful death.

I agree completely with everything you just said...


I too initially came to the Shroomery to brush up on my culivation techniques (translation: I failed about a dozen times when I first started out, and finally decided to really research what the hell I was doing before I scrapped another $20 worth of spores) I found what I needed and I left...with no intentions what-so-ever of returning. A while later I needed help with something else and remembered how easy it was to find what I needed to find here...so I came back, got what I needed, and that was that. For about a year I browsed casually from time to time, learning what I came to find and then disapearing again for another couple of months (or however long it took until I needed to learn somethin new) I didn't contribute to the community at all...I didn't click on any of the banners...I basically didn't do jack shit but leech information off the site - and even that was on a strictly need-to-know basis. It wasn't until I started venturing over into S&P that I actually wanted to be a part of what was going on here...and it wasn't until I began frequenting OTD that I finally started giving back to the community.

I might have initially came to the Shroomery just to snatch whatever information I needed to know...but I didn't decide to stay until I finally started feeling more like a member of a family or something - had it not been for OTD, that would've never hapened...and it seems to me that there are a lot of other people on these boards that are in exactly the same boat.




OTD is the community - it's the sole reason we have the number of members we have here, the amount of participation we have here, and the number of people that keep comming back. Without OTD this is just another information site that people will come to when they need a quick answer.

I know this is a hard time for many of you who love the OTD forum. But what is in a name anyway? It is not like we are annihilating off-topic discussion from the community - you can still go make a post in The Pub about the best leak you ever took on the side of a school bus.. just don't post inane and empty drivel. I think that any initial change is always a bit trying, but people will eventually settle into it and be able not to concentrate on what may have been lost, but rather what they can still create. We are in no way telling people to bite their tongue, but respect for others and common decency is expected. Off-Topic will not die, it will only grow with time. Change is inevitable.

Not even the owner can control who wants to patronized his establishment. He can take measures to increase the probability that he will attract a certain clientele, but he cannot force anyone to come in.

Do you think a bar could servive if they take all their regulars and toss em out because they are not "high class" enough?

It sickens me that you who want the freedoms to be able to discuss mushrooms without persecution are too God damned uppity to give the heart of this commiunity what it deserves.
