My sister won't get her baby vaccinated
    #21170669 -

With the recent measles outbreak at Disney, my sister made it known that she's doesn't plan on giving her child the normal regimen of vaccines it needs.  I've tried to convince her otherwise with science and data...but she reads a fuck ton of bullshit stemming from websites that promote medical misinformation and woo (think Natural News, if you're familiar).  This leads her to believe that her child does not need them, that certain viruses and diseases aren't that bad; never mind listening to her brother who fucking works in vaccine development, never mind the wholly unethical nature of subjecting the general population to dangerous diseases that were since eradicated, and never mind that most of the vaccinations are imperative for those with compromised and weakened immune systems (like her child).

I don't know what to do.  I don't know what else I can say.  I think I've been taking too much of a hard line approach on this and I got a little pissed at her, but it's something I feel strongly about since this is a huge public health issue...and that's kind of what I spent half of my life studying/doing.  I also don't want her fucking kid to die.  She loves the damn thing and if something ever happened to it, I believe she'd become withdrawn and unapproachable like she was at a previous point in her life.

She thinks I can't tell her what to do or force her child to take anything...which I can totally understand.  However this is about more than herself.  Her child, whether it wants to or not, is not currently vaccinated and could die.  It doesn't have any control over this decision, just the same as it doesn't have any say over getting vaccinated or not..but it's life is in danger because of the decision my sister is making.  Even worse, it endangers those it comes in contact with.  I told all of this to her but she has none of what I'm saying.  For some reason, just because we live in 2015 means she won't believe a single fucking historical statistic I bring up.  She also cites that I work in pharma so I can't be trusted, but I'm not the one making the predatory business decisions...I'm a fucking scientist and I care about the well being of people.

I guess this is half a rant and half wondering if she doesn't listen to someone like me then who or what will she listen to?  Has anyone else encountered this?  I heard about the anti-vaccine movement in the news, and that's as far as my experience with it, but I've never had to deal with convincing someone to get their child vaccinated...much less my nephew.

I hear your frustration.  The whole "dangers of vaccines" theory has been debunked and was found to have been based on fruadulant information to begin with.  Idiots like Jenny McCarthy were running around hyping people up and encouraging the whole anti-vaccine movement.  I remember while I was in school (for the medical profession that I practice) there were a whole bunch of kids in one county in California that died of pertussis.  That's fucking whooping cough!

All that being said though, it is her child and I believe in the sovereignty of the individual and the right of parents to make decisions for their children as they see fit, so long as they're not actively harming their kids.  As I don't have kids myself, I can only say so much.  If it were me I would tread lightly so as not to damage a relationship with my sister and undermine her as a parent.  I would also show her pictures and written descriptions of the nearly eradicated diseases that can kill an unvaccinated child who doesn't have the acquired immune defenses to fight them off.  I'm sure there are stats out there showing how rare adverse effects to vaccines are and how deadly, yet easily preventable, many diseases are.  If I were the father, woo!!!, that would be a different story!

The typical response I hear from them is, "read up, sheeple." And they utilize Infowars as a qualified source.

You do realize even the vaccinated have contracted measles, right?

That's a good idea with the pictures and descriptions...show her what she's up against if she chooses to refuse.  Maybe give her a little perspective.  I really don't want to come off like I'm pushing anything on her, which is why I posted rather than trying to ram more knowledge down her throat.  The father has no idea what to do as my sister is very strong willed woman and pretty much wears the pants in that relationship   Also, that really sucks about those pertussis cases, that's another big one right now.  I don't believe we live in one of those pockets of unvaccination, but you never know what other parents have chosen for their kids

Of course!  I made it very clear to my sister that I wasn't refuting the fact that certain problems have existed with them.  There's risk in vaccines.  Where I find the disconnect is where she believe the risks of getting the vaccine outweigh those of abstaining.

Perhaps you should work with your sister's beliefs, which should prevent a loss in your relationship with her.

You can't force her to vaccinate her child, but you can help her strengthen her child's immune system.  The immune system is incredibly powerful, working with it is very beneficial.

I'm not worried about my relationship with my sister.  We're good and that will always be fine.  She can take my criticisms, but she doesn't always listen to them.  I know I can't force her and I won't take it that far.  I'm trying to work with her beliefs and I guess I have to, but I feel all protections should be taken.  Given my profession, I guess I'd feel better with her stance if she was basing her decision on something other than faulty science.  I just don't want to see a tragedy happen in our family.  She is my sister and I can, albeit reluctantly, bite the bullet and hold her wishes for her child higher than concerns of public health.

Sure, and some skydivers with perfectly good parachutes have still plummeted to their death, but I wouldn't jump out of a plane without one.  Ultimately, you're right about not losing a good relationship with his sister.  Also, it's no one's right to push something on the parent of a child.  So, that being said, I wouldn't bring it up unless she does.

I don't personally trust the medical establishment, for one they steal our foreskins in America, and this procedure, genital mutilation, kills babies every year, one death is too many and men deserve the right to choose, sensitivity is *profoundly reduced* www.thewholenetwork.org

secondly their idea of "medicine" is laden with side effects and causes millions of deaths per few years,

and finally the people calling the shots have openly called for our world's population to be significantly reduced and one way to do that is through vaccines, there is a lot of credible argument against vaccines, people sometimes get paralyzed, develop autism, drop dead even as teenagers and etc.

I don't usually like to dredg up links, I report what I read.  What we should be doing is using CURES, not vaccinating.  I have mixed feelings, I can see how in an ideal world vaccines could do good, so who knows.

Good for your sister.

And for you, read Dr. Mary's Monkey, then tell me about how that polio vaccine really worked out.  There are reasons for the cancer epidemic, and cancer viruses in early vaccines are one of them.

Wow.  I work in healthcare, so I am aware my view might be biased.  While I do have a graduate degree based on science(not shit I dredged up on the interweb cited from secondary and unconfirmed sources), I often saw agendas people carried that wrote the texts.  Also, I am also aware anybody can get statistics to back up their cause/view.

Having said that, I feel your frustration with your family.  My wife and I do not bad mouth people who don't vaccinate their kids, but it's concerning to us that it is no longer a universal practice.  Practice acceptance with her.  Know that her kid will probably be fine.  Approach it as a societal issue and realize she has found a community that has a different world view.

My problem is that even more deaths used to be caused by the very things we're vaccinating them against.  The side effects and risks are real but many more people were much worse off without vaccines than with them.  A simple analogy being someone who doesn't want a car with airbags because they can kill you...or because my cousin and his entire family survived their whole life without wearing a seatbelt so why should I...just be a good driver.  The main difference being that bad drivers who cause car accidents don't usually reproduce at such an exponential rate.

If our world population needs to be significantly reduced, not vaccinating people is an excellent way to start a few epidemics

I realize now that this may not have been the best forum/site to post in, and I apologize.  I guess my views are in the minority, but thank you to everyone who posted.  I'm just going to leave it...not bring it up and not talk with her about it if she brings it up.  At least for the time being until I can meditate on it further.  I would love to be more understanding and patient but I believe if I started to talk with her about it again, the conversation would degrade quickly.
