My father told me today that he has a 90% chance of having prostate cancer. His (edit) PSA level has elevated everytime he's been to the uroligist lately, with a huge recent spike. He has opted to not receive radiation/chemotherapy treatments. I'm at a loss, I don't know what to say or do, just to enjoy what time is left. Is there anyone out there who can relate, anything is appreciated.

My grandfather had it and his prostate enlarged so much that he couldn't pee any longer.

So they put him under and removed the prostate and he was in pain for months.

You gotta bear with him and help him alot after discovery.

Sorry to hear that. :frown:
Maybe you could convince him to go in for treatment. The sooner it's done, the better his chances...

Sorry to hear that. But if he's opted out of chemotherapy, then it sounds like he's prepared to face his death, so it's time for you to prepare for that too. I wish you the best of luck in facing this. Also, I'm fairly certain that prostate cancer takes quite a while to kill you. My grandfather doesn't get prostate exams anymore because the proctologist said that even if he does have it, something else will probably kill him first.

that is awful... I know it doesn't mean much coming from someone you don't know, but I am truely sorry... if it happened to my father I know I'd spend a lot of time with him, whenever possible.

Sorry to hear that it's your father! :frown: Cancer doesn't mean that death is going to be tomorrow, it could be, but it could also be when he's 102. Continue to spend as much time as you can with him, but don't over-do it, don't want him to feel paranoid about dying. You never know when anyone is going to leave this earth, but as long as they know you love them before you go, they will be in peace, and it will all be ok again someday

Thanks, agr8fulchick, your post helped a lot. I'm giving him space right now. My mother is really torn up about it like all of us, but we are trying to remain upbeat around him for now until the biopsy is complete. He is being positive about everything right now, in better spirits than the rest of us, I don't know if its because he has accepted it or not. Time will tell, thanks everyone again and I'll update this thread when we receive the biopsy results.

Oh what a smack in the face. Give your father space. Let him make his choice and then stand behind him. This is one cancer that can be cured if treated in time. hopefully he will see this and get the treatment he needs. A friend of mine just lost his mother to breast cancer. She battled it for 15 years and finally lost her battle about a month ago. If she had opted not to have the treatments he would lost 15 years with her. Perhaps when he has a chance for it all to soak in will start to look at his options. Good Luck and spend everyday like it will be your last.

Live each day like it will be your last, tomorrow my never come.
