Why is it inappropriate to say things like "you have bad breath"?
    #21140012 -

Someone smells like sweat or has bad breath or has something stuck in their teeth or his zipper is down or his feet stinks or whatever the situation.

Why is it inappropriate to let someone know unless they are your friend/family?

I've always wondered. Is it so damm hard to let someone know he has bad breath? Tellimg the guy is the only way he'll know cause nobody else will dare to tell him. Why is that inappropriate?

I never got it.

Please explain

It's all about how you say it. If you want to point something like that out, a good thing to do is say, "excuse me sir, can I say something to you?"

"Um, sure."

"There's a bit of food in your beard. Thought you'd like to know."

"Oh, thanks."

Patlal I had a boss  who looked at me and say you got a booger I thanked him. He ccould have let me walk around like that all day so it is not rude it saves you from further embarassment, Shit what if they let you walk around with stinky breath or a booger for all to see or smell that would be 10 times as bad.

Because you're basically pointing out a flaw about them and the other person probably only wants to be liked and respected by you.

But yeah, saying it respectfully and in an impersonal way where your feelings about it aren't involved and you seem genuinely concerned seems to be the best way.

If someone told me I had something in my teeth and sounded disgusted, I would be offended.  If someone said the exact same thing but sounded concerned about my well-being and how other people would perceive me, I would be very thankful.

By not telling someone, you're just avoiding the problem for yourself and shirking it off on them.

---I hope I wrote that clear enough and it made sense.

There is a word for what you should use. Tact.
But why do YOU always feel the need to point out others flaws.

I seem to recall you making threads about overweight people , now this?

Can't you just focus on the good in people, and stomach through it? who cares what they look or smell like. Some of the nicest people i've met were homeless and weren't exactly paragons of cleanliness. They still would do anything for me.

Its one thing if its bad breath or a mole, something they may not be able to do anything about.
If its a booger or mustard on their face or a zipper i feel like it it shouldnt be weird...

This girls tit was completely showing one time when i was out at a bar and i was like
"Hey umm fix your shirt"  then pointed to my own chest.

Her boyfriend walked up wanting to fight me and shit but i was doing him and her a favor and i made him feel stupid.

I've noticed that some younger people lack 'tact' and may think it's really ballsy to point out people's flaws. One time I was waiting for a class to start in college and these two girls were talking and this bitch says to the other girl, "I can't even focus right now, who are you looking at, lol!" because the other person had strabismus. I just remember thinking, "Bitch, the first day of class your breath smelled just like human fucking feces and I didn't say anything to you."

Anyways, yeah... 'tact' as InfiniteToker pointed out.
It's a learned skill.

I know a smelly, lazy guy at work.  The kind that stands there and talks to you while you work.  All I can do is breathe in his fumes and get the worst headache. Probably toxic for all I know. If it's a coworker, pin that shit on your boss.  Make em' tell him to bathe. (I haven't yet.)

Sorry guys, I have little tolerance towards those who make my already bad day, worse.

Well I'll give my opinion, if one of your family member has smelly breath. It wouldn't be rude to tell them.
If it's anyone different then yeah, they'll think it's rude. But if they're up in your face tell them.

Use my tactic.  Pull out a pack of gum, toss one into your mouth.  Pretend like you're about to put it back into your pocket and say "Oh wait, want one?"

Commenting on someone's bad breath is like....

"Hey dude, you got a big mole on your face"

IME bad breath is usually due to dental issues, etc, so it's a chronic condition. The person might already know, might not be able to do anything about it so, why point out a potentially negative aspect of their selves they might not be able to do anything about?

I think this tact comes from people's consideration for their comment's subject's potential feelings. As an amputee I mostly don't get asked what happened, because people are afraid or think I might not be comfortable with the fact that I have a hook for a hand and a seemingly mangled other-hand. I guess I can't blame them, though their tact is misplaced.

The race I find most at ease with my amputations are Indians. They usually don't hesitate to ask what happened, and I tell them all about my pirate lore. Only once in awhile will others of Indian descent just gape.

It's just a thing in our society, to feel this level of appropriateness when talking to a less-familiar person.

yup so brush your fucking teeth asshole
