Joe, to be accurate, Effed actually changed a quite while before he was Modded (at least 6 months before). That's one of the reason's he was Modded. It goes back to his last big Flame war with Mak. That seemed to effect him, and he did some self-reflection, and he changed.

We are all constantly changing and growing. I know I look at this site, and my relationship to it, much differently than I used to. Some of this has to do with my position -- true, as an Admin I have to be concerned about the welfare of this ENTIRE site -- but some of it is also a function of growth and understanding. I have been changing and growing since I first got here, and I'll continue to do so long after I leave -- that is life. :smile:

PS: I didn't take your post as a flame at all. I understand what you meant, but I did want to set the record straight.

Also, for the record, I am not anti-OTD, but I am pro-Shroomery. I really want us to have both, but in order for this to happen, it's going to require the cooperation of all. OTD needs to change a little bit for the benefit of this community. I think we can all live with that. There will be a couple who can't, but frankly those are the people who are at the bottom of most of our problems, and they won't be missed. The rest of you are all really cool people, and I know you will be able to see the bigger issue here, and help make this a better community! :smile:

Because of those two threads, I think you'll understand why I've avoided the most sensitive looking topics in OTD. I haven't been here a long time. But, so far, I've seen quite a few senseless flame threads... that didn't begin that way.

Look at sykobish's recent threads.

Sure, OTD is more yin than yang. But the yang stings. Most popular threads get flames. Sometimes senseless (which are so forgivable they can go unnoticed), sometimes though, these attacks are very personal.

You can't deny this. When people show vulnerability in OTD, somebody will try to capitalize on their vulnerability.

You showed me nothing but a thread that was made after I logged off and deleted before I came back. That contained multipe mods in it that felt it was okay to leave.

You're also talking about threads that are made when I'm not here, which are pretty much the same times everyday. I can't be here 24 hours a day. The posts that you talk about and mention are handled when I see them. I still see no evidence to support the amount of OTD bashing that everyone is doing.

I think you are missing my point B. I have no clue when you are here or aren't. I don't know you at all Bruiser... I'm a night owl. I didn't mean to imply you are a bad mod... from what I've seen, you're a straight shooter. You sounded defensive in your last post so I just wanted to claer that up.

The fact is, some people flame whenever they get the chance... just because they can. This is especially harsh to newbies who aren't expecting that from this forum.

I think the OTD should stay the same, but I think it should have a disclaimer pinned to the top stating Anything goes... and explaining the positive and negative aspects of a free speech forum.

Otherwise, the form needs stricter rules.

I also, think information about Ripper should be pinned to the top of the OTD board. His family was very respectful to The Shroomery. I wish The Shroomery would remember him publicly, and respectfully.

There is too much OTD bashing, but there are also problems with OTD that need to be corrected. I've got my foot in both camps, which means everyone's going to think I'm the enemy, because I'm not in their camp 100%. :wink:

This needs to be a respected and serious Mycology site, but we also MUST have a lively social side. The two go hand-in-hand. Everyone is getting so polarized over this issue, and making way too much of it. It is precisely all of this fighting and histrionics which are indicative of our problems as a community. What needs to happen is for ALL of us to come together, as a community, and make this web-site better! :smile:

1) If you are not an OTDer, then don't just bash OTD. Visit and contribute positively! "Create the condition you describe."

2) If you are an OTDer, then think about your posts and actions, and how they reflect on this community; how they effect this community; and how they effect others within this community. "Put your good where it will do the most."

And everyone, be a Shroomerite first, and forum regular second! :laugh:

PS: And if you will all get together and be more positive about making this site better, then I will stop making these cheesy speeches, ok? :grin:

These "experiments" you guys keep talking about..could you describe what exactly some of these ideas are? It's hard to form any sort of opinion on the issue when the details are left so vague. On top of that everyone assumes the worst and now everyones already freaking out and argueing when no on knows the whole story. So what are some of these ideas that are being considered and what is the specific purpose of the experiment?

Chat is a much bigger liability then OTD.

I was there for the first death and I knew ripper for awhile.

I think that OD should be gone. But my opinion doesnt matter, I've had to learn that. What mattered was the will of the shroomery.

Freak is still here, looner is still here. Im sure that people who have posted on our boards have died. But they didnt die while participating. These are different circumstances.

Ythan once wrote a great post along the lines of this being an elementary school.

He said it wasnt 2nd grade and he wasnt a teacher, suck it up and deal with it. OTD is a cesspool.

Hehe, PK, I"m sure that post is going to hit it off well with the shroomery administration. That sounds wierd even saying. Or where did this "shroomery staff" phrase even come from? It just sounds bizarre to me. I like the school analogy because right now whenever someone says "Shroomery Staff" I get this image of a whole bunch of old professors at some college trying to reign in a bunch of 20 year olds.

Anyhow I agree OTD is bad, but I don't think its half as bad as people make it out to be. You can still post in there, threads still get decent replies... Yes some people post too often, and some don't post a lot of content but OTD has always had people like that. I just don't understand all this whining and bitching about OTD ruining the site. If you want to talk about negative impacts on the site lets talk about kids teaching other kids how to maximize the effect of the time release oxy tab they just bought. Mmmm nothing like helping kids get the most out of their legal heroin.

Anyhow, as far as changing OTD People might even be open to some changes if the "staff" would let us lowely common members know what the hell these upcoming changes are. As it is now aparently the "public" isn't entitled or can't be trusted with that information.

Also shit like this really pisses me off, I don't know when the shroomery started taking itself so seriously

No offense, but why does the shroomery have to be a respected and serious mycology site. I don't think seriousness has ever played a huge roll in this place. IE look into the classic "nipple tek" - Most of the people here aren't that serious, there is lots of good information, lots of intelligent people, and always innovative things going on in cultivation forums here. Where the fuck does respect play into that? Do you want us to be a respected site so you can have bragging rights? Obviously we're "respected" enough if the shroomery is getting as many hits and has as many members as it does. And I'm glad papaver that you want us to have a "lively social side" but because of your age I think the average user of this site and YOU would probably see what that entails a little differently. This probably explains why you are so anti OTD and the average person on this site doesn't have the issues with it you do.

Anyway, maybe I'm stepping on too many toes, could be. This whole shit pisses me off though because no matter how much you want to deny it there is a definite feeling that these changes are being made by an elite few, who are not representing, or respecting the majority. To top it off there is this incredible feeling that some of the mods (not all of you! some of you rock) have this whole mightier then thou complex and feel they in their infinite wisdom know what is best. The few making decisions for the many never leads to good things.
