I am sure most of you know this, but my bud wanted me to tell y'all anyway so bear with me. A couple days ago, he removed a piece of tape from one of his wetter jars and for the heck of it, he removed a piece from another jar that was looking fine and left the rest covered. All he can say is to let em breathe while incubating. The growth comparison is amazing!
What a rewarding hobby, he says! Learning so much on the first try. he owes it to some of you out there, so check out his pics... he wants to give some love back! Can u dig it!?
Below are jars with inoc. holes covered.
Here are the two that had the tape removed from just ONE hole.
Side by side. Uncovered on left as you can tell.
..and finally a close up of the inoc. point of one of the recently uncovered jars.

Nice job, man!
You're on the money about the benfits of a little fresh air. I think this factor is downplayed or completely passed over in most teks and deserves mention.
For the record, since I quit using tape and starting loosening the lids a smidge, I have had nothing but happiness, without the loss of a single jar. I do leave the foil lids on (from PCing) for the duration of incubation, though.

i dont leave the tape on any of my four holes while incubating, so go ahead and remove the tape from all the holes
also, nice start, i had real good success on my first try from the help of these guys and lotsa reading

if using tyvek in BRF jars is the top verm layer neccesary, do you innoculate through the tyvek, the verm must be neccesary cause otherwise the holes could introduce contamination.

never used tyvek, but I'd stick with the dry verm layer regardless. leave tape on the inoc. holes until first signs of growth and then remove tape. my $.02

Should one only open the innoc holes in a BRF jar after colonization?

Tyvek is a material that allows air exchange but keeps out contams. You can get tyvek envelopes from the post office for free. Just cut em up and use as needed.
