waterlogged PF Jars

I boiled my first attempt at some PF cakes about a week ago and as I was inocculating them, I noticed that some look like they got a little waterlogged. I went ahead and squirted them anyways because I didn't really have the opportunity to start those jars over. I'm thinking the jars probably won't completely colonize (if at all), but if they do, is it possible to cut off the uncolonized part after birthing or am I just wasting my time?

Well, they say the recipe has the correct amt of water already in it. Any more may ruin the substrate. I was sterilizing my first jars (homemade) today in my new PC and water entered through the inoc. holes in the lid...threw the substrate away Try wrapping tin foil around the jars before sterilizing

the pf tek doesn't say how much water to use when making the jars just make them "oatmeal like" .. the amount of water may vary on the verm your using .... i found the fine fine grade vern likes around 70 cc's of h2o and the chunky grade likes around 65cc's ... I have had jars get water logged in the pc and still have used them .......

Everything was fine during incubation? Maybe I won't worry as much if it happens again... It is sterile water, I guess it can't hurt it...

Your cakes will take forever to colonize if there's too much water. I'd suggest you throw out your substrate and start over. The mixture I use for 12 jars is 1000 ml verm, 500 ml BRF, and 500 ml H2O. 500 ml is just a little over two cups, and I usually come out with just enough to fill a dozen jars. Keep the ratio 2:1:1 verm/brf/h2o, and cover the jars with tinfoil when you're sterilizing them. Good luck! Which sub-strain are you growing?

MAJOR PF TEK SNAFUS FOR THE NEWBIE
Water inflitration of the jars during sterilzation. There have been many isolated posts concerning delayed or stopped colonization. This seems to always concern the lower half of the jar. The simple explanation is water infiltration into the substrate during steaming. This happens two ways. The first is that there is to much water in the pot and the boiling water can slosh into the jars. Then the water builds up in the lower part of the jar and the soaked substrate will not colonize correctly (or not at all - and stall) The second way is water dripping from the top of the pot down onto the jars. If you use regular canning lids, these do not seal the jar and water dripping down can go into the jars.
In the first incident - use a safe amount of water so that sloshing into jars doesn't happen.
In the second incident - cover the lids with tin foil to ward off dripping water.
In my oppinion the jars will colonize only around the needle holes where you inserted the need and then will stop completally. Guess you have to start over... Sorry...

Well, I'm gonna start them over. The latest batch I did was completly wrapped in foil and the inoc holes were taped over. Happy to say everything came out fine. I'm using 2/3 c verm, 1/4 c flour 1/4 h2o per jar.
Could it be the Ramsey seal? Maybe the lid can't really get a good grip because of the foil?

I had this happen to me a couple times, probably because my water level was too high. You're right, the soaked substrate has no space for the mycelium to grow, and often the mycelium just comes to a screeching halt. It was an accident, but in my first attempt, I had a heating pad under a tupperware bin for an incubator , and my holes werent taped. This served to dry out all my jars, but the soaked cakes did eventually colonize as they dried out. The fruited Ok, too. You might want to give it a shot before you chuck them.

You saying I got a simple mind Anno? j/k
Seeing as though I'm out of spore solution I don't really have the option of starting those jars over. Anyone care to send me a print of a fast colonizing strain?

I messed up one of my jars too. It is soaked, i mean you cant even see there is verm in there, it just looks like a mush of brown stuff. It is colonizing very slowly, all jars are done and this one is at 1/2. Yellowish stuff formed at the beggining of colonization but it is gone now. I am going to be using Moe's Outdoor Tek on that jar once it is colonized.
