I would like to mention that if using different size tins or the amount of sub in a tin will affect the length of time for the pasteurization of 140F - 170F for the 2 hours. I use a meat thermometer. BTW, these turkey tins are 1$ everywhere right now.

It took me a very long time to get the center up to 140F.  I did 2 very large tins and the tin on the top rack took me a very long time.  The middle tin did very well so from now on I think I will only do 1 tin @ a time.

If you hydrate your substrate with very hot water right before you pasteurise it. It doesn't take long to reach 140.

that is what i do! probably should have mentioned that in the op.
thanks. i use heated water to expand the coir/strawnet ect. so that it expands in about 10 minutes or less.

sorry dilated didn't mean to screw you over man. it should be real easy if you mix about 4 tubs worth of subs in one mixing box. ill just lay 4 bricks of coir in the tub, bring half a big pot full of water on the stove on high heat about 8 minutes just enough to get it warm(my big pot full of water takes 22 minutes to get to a rolling boil). then pour it in the mixing box so that its about 3/4th the way up the coir bricks. i put the lid on for 10 mins then go back and look at it. if it all looks completely expanded and wet, ill then mix my subs up. if a coir brick or two are looking expanded but a little dry. ill then put a little more warm water maybe an inch or two. i don't really measure it at all. i simply expand it. then mix in all the ingredients. then kinda just mix in water to just above field capacity by hand and eye. if you know how field capacity looks and feels from mixing it using other methods than it isn't any different. the only difference is having more than a drip of water. almost two drips of water so to say.

i hope that makes sense.

here is a picture sequence. this is coir with warm water. its expanded. then i put the strawnet in. add more warm water to expand that. then mix it all up.

im pretty lazy so i don't cut the liner. i just tuck it back like so.

but don't think i haven't cut the liner before just preference and laziness. it doesn't cause any less of a flush than any other way.

bricks of coir like this

mixing box is this exact sterilite.

my tubs are 66 quart like this.

when its all mixed in and in the tins.

mixed into my tubs after it has pasteurized and cooled.

lmfao. using hot water. I just spent an hour getting one of my sub trays to 160F by having my oven on at 300F. I should have known better. On the other hand, my smaller trays got to 160F within 15 min of being in the oven at 300F.

i really just set it in the tins at 170 set it for 2.5 hours and let it be. can't be easier than that. only reason i say to check your oven is if the lowest setting is higher than 170. but even then ive had it work at 200 degrees without an issue. i grew for 5 years in an oven lowest setting at 200 and i did the same thing.

thanks man! initially the first try is your temperature gauge range. once you figure out your oven, just do it like that every time. i generally have so much spawn to mess with that i just put it in the oven for 2.5 hours at the lowest temp setting on an oven at a new place i move to. but, its good to learn and figure out your particular piece of machinery.

Since the margin of error on ovens is over 90 degrees, I feel like I should point out that this is an awful, inaccurate method for anyone to perform without the use of a reliable probe thermometer, especially where poo is involved.  It's great that it works for you, eatyualive, but I've spent a lot of time on here arguing with lots of newbs about the fact that oven teks aren't reliable and now I'm seeing a resurgence.  In fact, I was linked here in a thread from someone who had completely botched a substrate because in this method you A) fail to mention the parameters of a successful pasteurization and B) don't talk about the inadequacies of other oven methods, leading the poor guy to use an amalgamation of your method and another and ending up with an overcooked poo nightmare.

I use a thermometer  but for me oven pasteurization is the only way to go. Works great and oh so easy.

I'm with you. I do a variation of this method on a regular basis. It works fine.

I thought you use the My Improved Bucket Tek. Did you stop using it?
