dung questions: oven pasteurization and storage
    #1046046 -

So, would Dung be pasteurized if I put it in the oven at 170 degrees for an hour? It would dry it out, but then I'd like that because it would be good for storing in a bag and then pulling out and rehydrating before use whenever I need it over the coming winter months. Or does it work fine to pasteurize it the normal way (pillow case in water) before storing it in a bag for a few months? What are your strategies for keeping poo over the winter?

I took a big rubbermaid container, and just dumped the 20 pound bag into it, slit it up the middle with my knife, and scoop the dung out to be pasteurized as I need it.

In the FAQ they say you dont want to store dung for very long (if at all) while wet if you are not planning on pasteurizing it again before use : however, I've used dung that I pasteurized 2-3 weeks ago succesfully. Since pasteurization, it has been sitting in a wet towel inside 2 safeway bags in a closet - not what I'd expect to keep it super clean. Your mileage may vary though.

I guess it depends on how much dung you have. Dry dung will definitely stay good for a long time, but maybe its more of a pain to rehydrate and all that - I just scoop my dung into the pillowcase and away I go.

Anyway, peace. Nice to see people from BC on here.
