I agree 100%. I have no problem dispelling misinformation.

Here lately, I've just been sticking my pot of CVG in the oven. I've been scaling down, so I don't have to do as much at one time. And it's CVG, so I only use the heat to cook the coir anyway.

I'm about to start trying manure and straw again and will be using this tek. I think I'm going to order some manure pellets from one of our sponsors because I don't want to deal with any horse people. My friend has neighbors with cows though, so I may hit him up.

sbj, hey i don't actually put the straw that i used to cut up in the oven for pasteurization or at least i haven't ever tried. i have used pelleted straw mixed in with coir/verm like this. that worked fine. if you cut the straw down as fine as you can i prefer about 1/2-1" pieces max and coat it well with dung i can't see why it wouldn't . i know highroller was doing it with dung/straw. i always used to pressure cook the straw while i oven pasteurized the dung because i was so paranoid about straw back then.

when you get the time go through all those comments from highroller i posted. he goes into great detail about his oven pasteurization and treatment of casings/bulks bus/ spawn. i always used a 50/50 coir/verm casing with great results using dung/straw. im sure jiffy mix or many other casing recipes will work just fine.
hell ive even fruited directly off of dung/straw no casing. but try not to go over 30% straw in the sub. the nutrients in straw get depleted extremely fast. they also give you the biggest mushies!

but when i used to do straw only, i would get a giant 8-12z dry flush but it was only 1 flush.

I didn't know ovens could be 45F off. Kinda sounds like the oven would be broke. Like, you set the oven to 170F and the oven is actually only getting to 125F or 215F?

Newbie question: can you break up a some cakes as your spawn or is it best to utilize grain for this?

TEK has been added the favourites! I will be testing this out in a few weeks for sure!

cat country cat litter. which is pelleted wheat grass fibers. and strawnet which are also compressed wheat fibers.

Quote:
Wheat and wheatgrass come from the same plant, Triticum aestivum. The term "wheat" generally refers to the grain often used to make flour, while "wheatgrass" refers to the young grass that grows before the grain is produced.

Quote:
Straw is an agricultural by-product, the dry stalks of cereal plants, after the grain and chaff have been removed. Straw makes up about half of the yield of cereal crops such as barley, oats, rice, rye and wheat.

dunno if that helps you.

you can but it would take about 4 pf cakes per quart of spawn you use. i generally use 5 quarts grain spawn to 10 quarts volume substrate. that would be 20 pf cakes per 10 quarts of substrate give or take. you can make those pf cakes go much further by p2ging them to grain and using grain spawn as your inoculant. if you do a search on the forum for pf cake spawning you may find some good ratios of cake to substrate to use. but you may want to use a much lower volume of substrate if your only using a few pf cakes. i can't really give you any suggestions on recipes because i use grain spawn to inoculate bulk substrates.

Yes. That's what I was wondering. I know you've said something about using the kitty litter before, but I just wanted to make sure.

Since the margin of error on ovens is over 90 degrees, I feel like I should point out that this is an awful, inaccurate method for anyone to perform without the use of a reliable probe thermometer, especially where poo is involved.

i did mention to use a thermometer to get your inner temps up to proper pasteurization temps. ill update speaking about oven variation.

Quote:
You can take the route of getting a turkey thermometer and measuring the inner temp to make sure its at the correct temp

what i didn't mention was the temperature because this is a highly debated issue and has been longer than you or i have ever been around the omc. many disagree but 140-170 works. im not here to argue that 140 or 170 is the best temp. if your comfortable with 140 use that as your temp guide. i keep my inner temps between the 140-170 temperature range for 2 hours. ill update the op explaining that everyones oven is different and you need to do a test run first to see how long it take your particular oven to get your substrate to inner pasteurization temps.

Quote:
It's great that it works for you, eatyualive, but I've spent a lot of time on here arguing with lots of newbs about the fact that oven teks aren't reliable and now I'm seeing a resurgence.  In fact, I was linked here in a thread from someone who had completely botched a substrate because in this method you

yes it works for me, but ive seen this method work for many long before any bucket tek existed. ive seen hundreds of consistent results over the years from many different OMC sites and many different growers, and badass old hands. what your saying about reliability is that YOU haven't seen consistent results. maybe its possible that since trends come and go, older ideas are hidden in the cracks and its possible maybe You didn't look in the right places. i would not use this method for 15 years if the results were inconsistent. ive used it for every single grow on a weekly basis for 15 years. how much more consistency do you need?

oven pasteurization was a fad back in the late 90's just like cvg and bucket tek are today. they both work just fine.

im extremely happy for you that you can argue with newbs. if that sense of arguing with a newb satisfies you, then go for it. but i take a different approach. what i find fascinating is that you haven't seen consistent results using oven teks. that to me means you need to do a little more digging. Ill give you a perfect example to lay your doubt to rest and save you time in searching. im a bit of a dinosaur so ive seen it all. and ill point you in the right direction.

Read the first paragraph which i highlighted in bold for you. ill gladly trust highrollers results as consistency. And i was using that same oven tek method 10 years before he posted this thread with consistent results.  In addition, ive grown more than 10 years using all kinds of dung with this same method just as highroller shows it. ive grown out pans, cubes and oysters on dung.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20660285/fpart/1

:mindblown:

you can't get much more consistent than that.

Quote:
A) fail to mention the parameters of a successful pasteurization and B) don't talk about the inadequacies of other oven methods, leading the poor guy to use an amalgamation of your method and another and ending up with an overcooked poo nightmare.

anyone can do a search and find information about pasteurization. i dont' have time to read every single pasteurization thread on the omc and criticize it.

this method has always been simple and always will be simple. major millet showed it to me 15-17 years ago.

Results: here is a short sample of a few oven pasteurized cased and non cased grows over the years. starting from 2003-2014.(the first 4 are cased, the rest are uncased)

if this were causing me as many contaminants as you say it would  then how can i keep a full rotation and perpetual harvest all year long for 15 years straight with very little contamination? id say 15 years of results are fairly reliable. your handfull of trials don't really prove anything to me.

i updated the op showing how i bring the coir up to temp prior to putting it in the oven. ill mention to measure your first run adequately because everyones oven is different but it has already been mentioned numerous times in the thread. ive used 4 different ovens over the years and they all worked using 2.5 hours whether electric or gas.

I remember reading posts about wet heat vs. dry heat and thinking  :justno:

Moisture inside the jar/bag is not different than outside. Heat is heat, and while moisture makes it penetrate better, it doesn't matter where its present IMO. If you have a properly hydrated sub, and then heat it to the correct temp, you get pasteurization.
