CVG as a casing?
    #20865167 -

Hey all just a quick question.. Since I'm doing a 27 qt mono and all I have is coir bricks. Since I'm only gonna need about 1/2 of what I'm going to pasteurize, can I save the rest of it to use as a casing? I've tried UTSE but nothing about the gypsum was in the threads.

Gypsum in a casing wont make any difference.

Casings, nutritious or not, should be pH buffed above 7 with lime to prevent mold from germinating on them.  If your using a substrate material for a casing that is not buffered you may run into mold early on in fruiting.  You also run the risk of your substrate just consuming it as more substrate (rendering the casing useless) because of the high nutrition.  Casings should be low to non nutritious for best results.

Ok.. So maybe I'll just shelve the leftovers. I have links bookmarked for casing via franks shit in my sig. Is it more beneficial to case KSSS? I only have what amounts to 3 gts of spawn for that, hence the 27 qt mono.

Damion5050's Elemtary Coir tek has it as a casing and I see a lot of people casing with their substrate. I haven't heard of a higher likelihood of mold though.

:shake: gypsum will stabilize the ph which will other wise swing as the colonizing myc eats at it...gypsum kicks ass everywhere you toss it:laugh2:

here is one example.

oh i do too as it isnt' around all year here and i don't' go out of my way for it with cvg whatsoever, just pointing out that it isnt' a useless thing to use in casing layers and helps alot with peat/verm/lime:super:

I have never needed to buffer a coir or coir/verm casing. Both tubs in my sig were cased with either coir or coir/verm, as are almost all my grows.

I don't always case but when I do I use CVG.

I use either CV or CVG or just V to case.

I just cased 2 PE tubs with CVG a few days ago and the myc is really tearing through it. I'm not sure if I should let it go or what other options there are. Do you mist/fan with these casings?

I'm glad to have opened up a discussion here on using CVG this way. I want to try to case my KSSS when it colonizes (or whenever I'm supposed to). I've never cased anything so.. I think I'm going to spawn my KSSS today or tomorrow. I also have some albino PE I'm getting psyched about putting onto some agar:thumbup: And would like to have a feel for casings by the time the PE will be ready. Would I be better off using a different tek?

Did you case and fruit? Or case and leave in colonizing conditons? To case with coir I find you have to pay attention to your culture and how it behaves. Aggressive cultures do better when late cased or at least cased thick (0.5") and fruited. Slower cultures can simply be cased at 1/4" and fruited the next day.

:takingnotes:
I think I'm gonna try the 50/50 coir/verm as a casing. Seems simple enough.

So lets say I use Damion5050's tek and get that extra casing layer. How would I go about storing and then rehydrating this for a day while I wait to see how aggressive my culture is?
