No Pigs... ? Why ?

Why is it, that Muslims cannot consume pig flesh?

I've asked various representatives of the religion; and I get answers like: because we can't/ not allowed; its in our Holy Book; the pig is a filthy animal... etc..

I am not convinced with those responses.. I still don't understand why..

Does anyone here know of a different answer?

A Muslim once told me that according to his faith, pigs were created by Allah to eat up the rotting corpses of human beings left behind by Noah's flood. Supposedly these first pigs were crafted by combining three animals. Therefore their faith considers the animal to be filthy. All I know is bacon cheeseburgers are better than regular cheeseburgers.

the flesh of swine often carries parasitical diseases (trichinosis comes to mind...)
& in a desert environment pork may not "keep" well...
& if jehovah told moses, then allah could have told muhammed about forbidden foods...

That's amusing..  pigs (skin) most resembles humans.  Maybe that's from all the peopl they ate? :wink:

my family is jewish, and thats her take on the whole kosher thing. think about it, meat and cheese is unhealthy, its not kosher. pigs arent healthy, they're not kosher. animals on the floor of the ocean aren't kosher, those sure as hell aren't healthy. my mom is kinda weird sometimes, but sometimes she makes sense too

It usuall stems from the same reason the jews cant combine their food. Hygiene. They just put it in the holy book since the word of god would have more impact than just their mom telling them its wrong.

I'm Muslim, but I do not know the exact reason as to why we aren't allowed to eat pork, but... even if I wasn't Muslim, I still wouldn't eat swine. They are too disgusting for me...

I bet Zahid knows the real reason though.

Maybe its because pigs eat their own shit? Someone told me that the pigs dont fully digest their food... so when they crap it out, its not fully digested, and the other pigs eat it... so on... and so on, till its gone.Maybe thats not true, and the people who told me that were... should i say... Full of Shit?

The restriction of pork in western religions is nothing new. It exists in Judaism and Christianity, although not widely practiced by Christians. There are other food restrictions in Islam as well such as dead meat, animals with fangs, etc. - ?Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked a name other than that of Allah.? (Al-Ma?idah: 3)

The Prophet Muhammad forbade pork because the meat was considered unhealthy and potentially disease-ridden (because of helminthes and Taenia Solium; the tapeworm). There are also a few references to the pig being a filthy creature which is fairly evident.

I like the arguement betweem jules and vincent in "Pulp Fiction" or at least i think it was that movie.

Like in the movie ive known people who owned a pig as a pet. They really are not dirty at all, that is just a myth since humans tend to sanction them off in muddy places.

You're thinking of pot bellied pigs... small, cute, and easy to keep clean. Some people even tie little bows to their tails.

As for your run of the mill pig, I've worked with them on a pig farm for two weeks in July while helping out a co-worker. They are filthy, although its so innocent it's cute.

No zahid, ive seen real big pigs kept by some people. They actually are quite smart and one i know is house trained.

moreso than the average dog. Thats why I laugh when people say "I can't believe asians eat dogs, its so cruel!" Meanwhile they're chowing down on the carcass of an animal that is arguably more sentient than the cute widdle doggies.

I don't doubt that. Animals are amazing creatures. However, not all animals are equal in cleanliness. Take a dog and a cat for example. I doubt that the muddy reputation of the pig is just some myth that has somehow always persisted out of "basic ignorance" of the animal.

Anyway, it's besides the point. Pork was likely forbidden in western faiths for simple health reasons.

I highly doubt it's a sin to bacon up that Cheeseburger.

Who is to say mud really is all that dirty  :tongue: heck some people take theraputic baths in mud.

i used to own chinchillia and they take dust baths yet i dotn consider them filthy.

But on a more serious note i completely agree that the reason pork and other bottom feeders are banned is for health reasons.

same reason jews can't eat pork.. pig meat goes bad VERY quickly in hot weather. faster than beef. pigs also do tend to spend more time in mud, and mud's NOT cleanly. it's a moist medium in which parasites can grow.
christians can eat pork because as christianity spread, the first big non-jew audience it came to was the Greeks.. and the greeks like their pork.. as did the europeans.

It seems to me that the myth of the pig is due to the basic ignorance of people who confine lots of pigs in a small place. Let's say you get together a whole shit load of cows or horses and you fence them in too small of a place. The ground will be turned to mud and the animals will get all muddy.

Pigs are a lot smaller, so they are fucking crammed into fucking places tighter than illegal immigrants coming down I-35 in a van. And they root. So yeah, of course they wallow in mud.

Now, do wild pigs collect in one area and fucking dig up the ground and then wallow in it. I'm not entirely sure, but I have seen like videos of wild boars and they seemed to roam about the forest.

And is mud a big problem in the desert, anyways? Isn't most of the Middle East in the desert? :grin:

Now, pigs may carry diseases, but it seems that other animals do as well. Hell, I'm willing to say that a lot of diseases that pigs have been known to carry were a result of the way that humans kept the pigs.

Nowadays, we have meat inspections. Health regulations. I can go eat some bacon and really don't have to worry about getting sick. Times change. Are we still forbidden from eating certain meats because a religion tells us not to?

I thought that Jesus said that it doesn't matter what is put in the mouth, but what comes out? Damn, all these rules and regulations kept by all these religions and the man who set the fewest rules and regulations was Jesus himself. You know, Jesus kicked ass. If he were here today, he would be tripping with us. He wouldn't mind what the people around him were doing as long as they weren't harming others and were living in the light.

So, vote for Jesus for President! :grin:
