Kosher

Every once in a while I'll ask someone if they know what kosher means. The usual non-Jewish response is that it's a type of pickle. The vast majority of people around me spend their entire lives paying a 'hocus pocus tax', and they don't even know they are doing it.

After doing some research, the general apologetic response is that it's a minuscule amount per item. This seems diversionary as one red cent should be too much for a service that holds absolutely no value to the majority of people who pay for it. The apologists never mention exactly how minuscule the fee is, perhaps out of fear that someone will do the math and work out the amount a person might pay over a lifetime.

Questions:

How do you feel about this practice? How much money have you spent to have your food blessed by rabbis?

and, the big question...

Why do the vast majority of food producers (at least in the USA) feel compelled to have all their food certified kosher, when only 2% of the population is Jewish?

I've only ever seen a brand of hotdogs being marketed as Kosher.

Most foods aren't marketed as kosher, but they are blessed all the same. I have trouble finding boxes of food that aren't marked kosher. There are several hundred different logos marking an item as kosher, most common being a 'u' inside a circle or a 'k' inside a circle. These and many of the other logos do not make their meaning apparent in any way, and they're usually quite small.

Wow, at first I didn't believe you, but then I checked out my fridge.. basically everything has one of those symbols. Even the mayonnaise. Even the offbrand food items. The only things I didn't find it on were wal-mart brand frozen veggies and Tony Cachere's creole seasoning :awetongue:

Maybe the vast majority of food producers are Jewish, and that's why.

shit well maybe its because many powerful people in america are jewish.

perhaps, it is done to prevent the number of competitor businesses. You might think 2 percent jewish population is small but if you had the option of increasing your business by 2 percent, when youre a massive corporation, you will take it. It also means your company is more likely to be invested in by rich jewish people.

hi
usually it only signifies that the process of making the food has been inspected and approved to eliminate all trayf.
i.e. no unkosher meat or shellfish.
and no chance of mixing milk with meat.

normally no blessing is involved, it just means the food is edible by people who are not allowed to eat trayf. A rabbinical engineer will have looked at the process and made recommendations about keeping things clean.
this is a higher degree of cleanliness than the usda food inspections which allow .01% mouse shit in hot dogs etc.
paying a fraction of a penny for cleanliness is worth while.

there is no extra charge for the absence of trayf.

a kosher meat product however does include live supervision that costs money.

I guess additional cleanliness inspections wouldn't be a bad thing, in light of the mouse shit (can you provide a citation?).
