What is on my cactus????
    #20600581 -

Just got these two peruvian torch about 3 weeks ago. Both were very nice and green when I got them. Rootbound, but in good health. What is this brown stuff growing on one of them though??? It just appeared about a week ago and it almost looks as if there is a hole in it :frown: I know its not not rot, they have been mostly dry with a few small waterings. They are also under shade cloth so I dont think sunburn could be it. Anyone know what this is? The one next to it is doing just fine

You say that it's been growing? It looks like a scab from some previous mechanical damage, but those black patches look like weeping black rot as well. Weird. Keep a close eye on it to see if it expands, in which case you may have to perform an amputation (or should I say "reverse amputation", for it is the amputated part that gets to survive?).

Yeah it wasnt on there when I got it, so its grown to that size in about 2 weeks. It has been quite humid recently but that hasnt seemed to affect any of my other cacti. Could it just be shock from moving to a new climate? It came from about 3000 miles from where it is now :justdontknow:

It should just grow over with time. Like Zed said just keep am eye on it. I have had the weeping black rot but it never seems to go further than scabby tissue so you should be just fine.

It will be fine in my experience. On my bridgesiis that happens when bugs get to them or my dogs bump them. The black things usually turn into little blisters and eventually scar over.

Here's one on one of my bridgesii cuts that's about to go in a pot. That has the same thing. I ain't even worried.

Trichocereus are incredibly resilient.

Oh and I wouldn't water it at all for a really good while. They heal better when they're dry.

Here it is all potted up. Nice 4 ribbed one. Notice the scarred over blister in the middle about halfway down? As long as you don't overwater it the cactus's natural defenses will be able to fight off any opportunistic infection. Remember these things reproduce largely by getting broken off, falling to the ground, and taking root.

Because of the time of year this guy's not getting any water until around Halloween, and even then it's just getting a tiny bit to stimulate root growth. It's staying inside all winter in my bedroom with very little light. When I repot it into a much bigger container this spring and start flooding it every 2 weeks it will fucking explode.
