Virginia creeper "blisters"

Some time ago I took a cutting of a virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), and I noticed some weird formations on it. Has anyone seen anything like it? Is it insect eggs, nectar, or what?



They are about 0.5 to 1 mm (1/50 to 1/25 inch) in diameter and not completely transparent. I haven't seen any insects on the plant, but that doesn't mean they're not there.

Parthenocissus vines (Boston Ivy, Virginia Creeper, Green Spring, ect) ooze that stuff when it gets hot outside. I'm not sure what it is though, probably some sap or wax that's inside the plant. I would guess that its some form of natural defense against the heat. Generally those little beads will form along the stem and also underneath the leaves.

In some cases, including mine, it is good for sending me to the doctor, broke out in itchy rashes. My eyes will swell up and I become nearly blind because I cannot open them. Every inch of my body becomes covered with intensely itchy patches of red rashes. It's horrible!!! I usually need a shot after even low exposure to Virginia creeper. I spend a lot of time and energy trying to eradicate that vine from my property without actually making leaf to skin contact.
